Re: Unpopular opinions

I think being trans is a mental disorder, but since it's not harming anyone I think it's just common sense and basic decency to treat them as their preferred gender.

THANK YOU. OH MY GOD THANK YOU FOR GETTING THIS.

IA, as a trans person. I know my brain's fucked up. I wasn't magically born in the wrong body, but ... I was. But what can you do? There isn't a pill to fix this.

Re: Unpopular opinions

(Anonymous) 2015-09-10 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see it as that - rather, I think it's physical, but I don't know how to explain it. I DO think it's a disorder, but more hormonal. I mean, it's like how some people are born without a limb - it doesn't mean they don't deserve one, but we can establish they weren't supposed to be born without it. It

Did that make any sense whatsoever?

since the brain is where our sense of self is, it'd be more accurate to say it's a disorder of the body

Re: Unpopular opinions

(Anonymous) 2015-09-11 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
How is that different from say depression or anorexia, which involve a distorted self image?

I'm not sure I follow...if the problem is with the sense of self, then why is it not a disorder of the brain?

I assume brain disorder means the brain is broken and could be fixed, but sense of gender is so innate, you wouldn't "fix" that without completely changing who a person was (not that it's even medically possible). Instead look at it as that it is the body that does not match, and ideally should be "fixed".

But...if gender is a social construct, how does that make any sense? Gender, and what is said to make up gender, is completely different on a culture by culture basis. Do you mean sex? Because sex can never be changed, you can't even change the chromosomes you have...

Gender ROLES are a social construct, not an inner map of what one's body should look like. I know, it confused me at first too.

Re: Unpopular opinions

(Anonymous) 2015-09-11 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
You have an inner gender compass. Think about it. Are you accepting of your assigned gender? Not accepting? Semi-accepting? Uncertain of how you feel? How do you feel about the sex of your body? How do you feel about your body wrt your gender? Where do these feelings come from? Are they cultural constructs? Why do different peoplke raised the same way in the same culture sometimes feel differently?

Related: I think most genderqueer/non-binary/whatever people are making it up for attention.

Re: Unpopular opinions

(Anonymous) 2015-09-11 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's for attention, but I do think a fair bit is internal misogyny, pressure to fit in online, and femininity being defined really narrowly defined so a lot of dfab people don't think they fit.

Honestly, if I didn't distance myself from the online sphere I used to frequent, I probably would have identified as non-binary at some point.

So edgy and unpopular to express an opinion shared by almost everyone else in American culture.

Lol at "unpopular".

Nope. Some are confused about gender roles vs gender, and a subset of them want to feel special, but not having an internal gender orientation is very dysphoric and real and impossible to ignore without serious mental health issues, but also very hard to live with the social consequences of being out.

Do you think it's just privileged bored white teens on tumblr, or summat?

Via Reddit, there's this sad story from 1915. (Library of Congress link, just in case anyone thinks it's just tumblr bullshit.)

Well, it's hard to know if that person would identify today as a trans male or genderqueer or what, but yes, throughout all societies, some people have had to work through non-cis gender orientation issues, and some societies more hostile than others :(

It's not a mental "disorder". As for the reason why this is so, kindly look up the definition of disorder as defined by the DSM.

Is is, however, a medical condition that stems from non-normative brain development.

Meh, you could say this about homosexuality too. This isn't an unpopular opinion by the way. This is the kind of thing that my conservative family shouts about at the dinner table and what more than half of Americans believe.
