What's really frustrating at least from the anime side of things is that if you watch the ending sequence, it showcases a lot of what is actually missing in the show itself: the whole gang together hanging out and having fun and showcasing their personality quirks. It feels like a group that I really could get into an enjoy, were those dynamics fleshed out in the show. I was even thinking of requesting it for Yuletide, to see if fandom could fill in those blanks.

Maybe it's just that "found family" is such a stock trope of shonen manga/anime that Nightow took it for granted this time. With Trigun, Vash was such an important figure within his own world that it felt right that everyone knew and gravitated toward him and fell into place. Leonardo, not so much (which is a shame because damn, those eyes, what a great design).

This is vital to me if the show makes a point about how important friendship is or how one person brought everyone else together. Neglect that and I'll be scratching my head over why the people are friends. And if they do or say things that go directly against this and they don't get called out on it? Then I'll be wondering what the show runners are thinking.

Looking at you, Sailor Moon Crystal. It took me reading the manga and watching the other adaptations to get why people consider SM to have good female friendships.
