(The sad thing is that I've had this conversation many times, and I'm not exaggerating much. And before someone says it, yes, I know there are plenty of Southerners who don't buy into this. I've heard this from people who never lived in the South and have no connections there but thought, for some reason I can't fathom, that Gone With The Wind was a historically accurate text. I'll admit to loving the story, probably in part because both of the primary characters are anti-heroes, but dear gods people, I knew at 13 it was a heavily biased and rose-colored view of how things actually were... historical fiction is still FICTION and many books in the genre take liberties with the actual history to suit the story the author wants to tell.)
