It was about State's Rights! Slaves had nothing to do with it! Erm, well, they might have had a little to do with it, because economics, but... State's Rights! And besides, there were good slaveowners who took care of their slaves, and look what happened to those slaves when they left! They would've been better off staying where they were taken care of and loved! Bad slaveowners, you say? Sure, they existed, but they weren't the majority! What do you mean, basic human rights? Oh, well, um... State's Rights! Yeah!

(The sad thing is that I've had this conversation many times, and I'm not exaggerating much. And before someone says it, yes, I know there are plenty of Southerners who don't buy into this. I've heard this from people who never lived in the South and have no connections there but thought, for some reason I can't fathom, that Gone With The Wind was a historically accurate text. I'll admit to loving the story, probably in part because both of the primary characters are anti-heroes, but dear gods people, I knew at 13 it was a heavily biased and rose-colored view of how things actually were... historical fiction is still FICTION and many books in the genre take liberties with the actual history to suit the story the author wants to tell.)

I've mostly been in these conversations online, but it was very bizarre when I lived in MA (I was born and raised in Washington State, but have lived in TX and MA before coming back home) and had people who had lived their whole lives in New England and no relatives or anything from the South who were spouting that. Literally, I asked where they got their information, and the answer was consistently "Gone With The Wind." I don't even.
