The series is happening, it's been confirmed for months now. The trailer...Netflix has said they had nothing to do with it but tbh I'm not sure I believe them. The production values in this are too high for it to just be some bored person's side project. (Look at the Lachrymose Leech!) Plus, if it was just fanmade I would think that the person/studio who made it would've come forward by now.

tl;dr it's "fake" but it could very well be Netflix pulling a fast one on us.

I didn't know anything about it until I saw this secret, and never finished the first book. I thought this article was really interesting, on the topic of it's fake fakeness.

Basically- teh production values are super high, the company's statement was apparently "We didnt' release this" (of course not, the reported from the series did)0, and the books have a history of such marketing techniques. I'm usually pretty skeptical, but it was persuasive.
