The first movie was good, but the second two went downhill. I can't even say that the Mirkwood Elves were the start of it, because I feel Beorn's house the trek through Mirkwood before the Elves came in was cut too short, but I feel the movies concentrated too much on the Elves when they did come in.

The movies should have concentrated more on the dwarves than they did (which is why I feel the first movie was good, because it stayed with the dwarves), and the love triangle was stupid and mishandled.

Actually, to get specific on the love triangle, it might have been good, if Tauriel had not ended up so pathetic by the third movie, but I feel her "strong woman" characterisation got crippled by the romance.

I also think there was too much Legolas on a whole. Too much "Legolas does cool shit!" to the detriment of anyone else doing cool tricks. I was always glad he would make an appearance, because he would have been there, somewhere, but... too much.
