I haven't met anyone who's attacked her for her views?
Everyone's kinda sad about it because they know she's a victim and she probably blames herself for what happened.

Didn't she her own experiences to say that if you go into a sketchy situation, with sketchy people, not fully in control of your faculties (ie drunk) then if bad things happen you should not be surprised?

Because that is a sensible statement.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-11 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Missing a word. Didn't she 'use' her own situation.

She puts the blame for being raped on *herself*, not, you know, the actual rapist, who chose whether or not to rape her.

That's not a grandma thing to say that will shortly be obsolete and should be ignored and unchallenged, that's rape culture alive and kicking.

I can understand her POV though, as victims of abuse, it is often more comforting to believe that we had some measure of control over our abuse, it can feel better to blame yourself than another, because the loss of control and violation that actually happened is utterly traumatic.

It makes me feel that it's the blogs/journalists leaping to put her attitude in an echo chamber just because they know it'll get strong reactions that are really the ones I'm shaking my head at.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Not really. Telling young women that they're to blame for their own rape unless they're not wearing shorts skirts and are sober is horrible. She clearly has a lot of complicated feelings and self blame about her own sexual assault and it's very sad she feels that way, but trying to make sure that other victims of sexual assault also blame themselves (as if they don't already do so!) is incredibly shitty.

Have none of you people heard of criminals and criminal behavior? Also bad people? They are real things. As is individual responsibility for ones own health and safety.

wooow check your head

(Anonymous) 2015-09-11 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Not everyone's grandma is like that, though. Way to generalize.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Because OP literally said "everyone's grandma is like that." Go back and read the text a little more carefully.

It's possible that your grandma is The Most Progressive Grandma Ever, Up-to-Date On Every Social Justice Issue (TM), but a good number of older people have at least some views that haven't entirely modernized. It'll likely happen to you, as well.

nayrt

I am, technically, old enough to be a grandmother. I volunteered at a rape crisis centre at the age of 19.

Maybe throw a "great-" or two on the front of that.

The difference is that grandma doesn't have a public platform

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
+1 My grandma might spout some BS, but she's not a feminist rock icon, so...

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
She's an idiot, and always has been. At least she not suggesting anybody should be lobbing bombs this time.

I think Chrissie Hynde was born in 1951, so...
