Why are there ram balloons?

An environmentalist organization pays you for every animal you safely transport out of combat zones. You do this by tranquilizing them and ballooning them out of there. Those balloons are also how you forcibly recruit enemy soldiers onto your team. It's awesome.

It's like someone made a game out of Tar Season Land, or something.

Rock Paper Shotgun logged the opening minutes. A choice extract:

Escape, somehow. The man on fire pursues, aided by a flying woman in a gas mask and distended, fiery arms. They seem unable to kill me. Maybe they don’t want to.

But they do want to PLUCK A GIANT WHALE FROM THE SEA, SET IT ON FIRE AND THROW IT AT A HELICOPTER.

And so they PLUCK A GIANT WHALE FROM THE SEA, SET IT ON FIRE AND THROW IT AT A HELICOPTER.

Then the man on fire rides on a flying unicorn on fire.

Yeah, I was like "A Balrog of Morgoth!"

Metal Gear is basically Tar Season meets JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.

This question is my favorite summary of the MGS series.

But really, it's because that's how your mercenary army collects animals for their petting zoo. Really.

It's a great game.

You can also throw horse shit at passing enemy vehicles to cause them to skid out, and there's a lady soldier who fights in a bikini because she has frog/plant skin that allows her to get energy from the sun and rain. Also it is the 80's so there are cassette tapes to rock out to. The game is batshit.

It's funny because after being a super-fan of the series since 1998 I'm just about burned out on Metal Gear and while I want to play the new game I haven't even played Ground Zeroes yet despite owning it.

I'll get to it eventually. Whole series through (including the non-canon spinoffs,) last hurrah, etc. etc.

I'm a huge fan too and honestly I'm not really enjoying Phantom Pain. I'm about 35 hours in and only at 18%, which you'd think would be amazing but at this point I just want it to be over so I can stop avoiding apoilers. You spend like 50% of your time just travelling between places for missions. Often the same places, over and over again, and there's fucking nothing in between them except a few plants, animals, and rocks/trees depending on where you are. There's "fast" travel in the form of helicopters but in the time it takes the helicopter to actually arrive, pick you up, go to where you want to go, and drop you off again, you could have just fucking walked there anyway. The core gameplay is pretty good, but most of the missions get very samey after awhile, especially if you want to do all the side ops. I understand Peace Walker had this same problem, but the difference is you could finish most PW missions in 5 minutes. Side ops in this can take upwards of half an hour, and most of that is travel time. Main missions can be hours, with shit like "Ok, Boss, we've located the target like 3000 metres from here. You can't fast travel without the mission ending, and there will be enemy patrols and helicopters hunting you so you basically have to crouch/crawl the whole way." It's just ridiculous.

I cannot believe people are saying this game isn't padded out. It's about 90% filler and padding and feels incredibly unfocused. I'll keep going because I'm a huge fan and I feel like I sort of HAVE to at this point, but it's not the exciting, epic masterpiece reviewers are making it out to be. Feel free to take your time getting to it. You might as well play GZ though, the main story is about 2 hours tops.

I've heard the story's really disappointing if you're a fan. Apparently, the ending makes the entire game irrelevant to the larger story of the series.

Yes oh my god that game... idk it broke my heart. And made me really dislike BB. It was just pulled out of someone's ass. I partially blame Konami for rushing the game and probably forcing Kojima to cut a lot of stuff or whatever, but on the other hand... idk he probably came up with the ending two years ago already.

I still don't know how to feel except betrayed.

My big concern about this endeavour is that sheep are not excessively concerned with where they go to the bathroom, and I imagine being suddenly and unwillingly air-borne does not help with the situation. Have Americans not dropped enough unpleasantness on the middle east?

I'm with you, OP. It's never been my type of game, but having watched people Fultoning everything that's not nailed down has made me curious for this entry.
