I really think we need to disable anon comments. Yes I realize I'm saying this anon, but after this post I'll be making a second account. There's really no need for anons since it's easy to make a second account for "anon comments" if you're afraid of someone going after your main account. The anon posts have clogged up the GC with their threads with opinions I'm shocked no one has called troll on given their backwards opinions that only a redneck would have, and not of someone who frequented this site given how relatively liberal we are.

This isn't even going into the nasty comments responding to the suicide posts. There was one coming from an OP who on top of sounding on the brink of suicide sounded like a minor. Sure that OP could be fine, but what about next time? These days it's considered illegal to bully a minor to suicide. What do you think is going to happen to this community if a teen does take their life and their online history comes up with a cry for help post they made here? At least accounts will hold the individual responsible if they bully a person to suicide here.

I already know there will be backlash over this proposal, but I still think it should be considered. I've been with fandom secrets for years, back when it was huge on LiveJournal. I want this community to thrive like a lot of other old timers here.

Are we having a lot more trouble with trolls than usual? I know for a while it was getting bad, but I thought that was a while ago. (Keep in mind I've missed several F!S posts, and I don't read all of the threads regardless so it's possible I've missed something.) I DEFINITELY haven't noticed anything nasty with suicide posts!

I think if there truly is a problem, we should consider, and I say that anonymously as well. I'd rather have to figure something out than for things to escalate, or worse, for fewer people to come to F!S.

Come on now. This isn't a liberal-only community and having to make a second account won't stop people from having opinions that you don't like. Besides, not all of us live in the US, so their laws won't really affect everyone, account or no account. Deleting the worst posts (like Case has been doing all along) is far more effective.

At the same time, anonymity is likely what enables folks like depressed OP to share their problems on here. All of those suicide posts have been anonymous too, so I'm not sure why you think they can be tracked to real people while the troll comments cannot.

As a liberal non-American, I do agree that FS is wayy more conservative than the kind of crowd I'm used to. But I don't think that means disabling anon comments here.

Sure, but what makes you think that the community will thrive if we stop allowing anon comments? Clearly if people wanted to sign up for an account, they would. But not everyone wants to, and it's clear by now a lot of people feel safer asking for help for bad situations when they're anon.

I disagree with disabling anon comments. Part of the charm of FS are our anons and the ability to comment anonymously. If you've ever been a member of a comm that only had named users (especially ones that only allow one account), you know it comes with a certain amount of stress (if you're prone to that), and increased clique behavior. The ability to be anon negates that here somewhat.

And the trolling isn't even that bad right now? And case is on top of threads that get bad (like suicide threads). People are allowed to express shitty options too. Even named users can have shitty opinions.

I'm sorry, but people need to develop thicker skins. People who come into a random place to spill their shit need to be toughened up. Its one of the reasons I'm 100% supportive of a certain named user. People like him are necessary for people to grow.

I don't think forcing people to log in is the solution for stopping assholes from being assholes.

However, I am all for logging ip addresses and banning ips of users who, for unknown reasons, can't contain their assholery.

I've been coming to F!S since 2007 (I think? god I'm old), and I've always been anon, and I've never once behaved badly.
This subject has been brought up a lot over the years, and I still haven't changed my mind.

Fandomsecrets should remain anon. (I'm ok with occassional IP logging tho, like that one time when we had that potential serial killer in our midst.)
By making this comm anon you'd only alienate people. There's nothing to stop the assholes from creating fake accounts and wreaking havoc (again, this also has happened multiple times in the past).

Making this place unanon will not give you the fuzzy, warm community you're dreaming about.

I'm gonna say this as respectfully as I can. F!S is not your babysitter. F!S is not your suicide hotline. It's great when some people on F!S do offer help. I've sought help here when I was on the brink of suicide myself. But it is absolutely ridiculous to somehow expect F!S to somehow be responsible for other people's wellbeing when it's not equipped to do so. :/

And this may be pretentious and overdramatic as hell, but I'm gonna quote it anyway...

I just wouldn't comment any more.

Not that I do a whole ton or anything, but I have never, ever posted something like suicide encouragement. It's most on those days that I'm interested in a subject, or have a bit of advice for an advice thread.

Then again, I would be the user known for suddenly disappearing and not continuing conversations because that happens. A lot. Memory issues are fun, especially since the secrets tend to go up right around my bedtime and my brain is most likely to "reboot" overnight.

I've always been anon. I've posted a lot, and I've never posted hate. I like most of our named users, I like even the users that get the most hate. But if Case got rid of anon posting I wouldn't post anymore, and I'd probably leave and never come back.

This is the only LJ-style comm I've ever been part of that didn't devolve into a douchebag circlejerk between BNFs or a sjw pissing contest.

This is a secrets community. Secrets are anonymous, comments should be the same. What we really need is to disable the log in options. This place would be much better if it was anonymous only. If you don't like anonymity, stick to Facebook.
