They'd be really appalled if they checked the "due dates" on most of the food in my fridge and pantry. Hey, if it's not moldy/rotten/gone off, it's good!

Agreed, though I don't think it's dumb. Wastefulness pisses me off, especially when it's easy NOT to be wasteful. Don't take more than one or two paper towels to dry your hands after washing them, recycle where you can, turn off the water when you're brushing you're teeth, etc.

Corrolary: People who waste meat. Herpy may moralize a bunch about eating meat at all, but I have no problem with the actual eating of meat. What I have a problem with is that to me wasting meat is disrespectful -- a living creature died so that we could eat, for fuck's sake.

Well, yeah. My point was that meat comes from an animal and I think wasting it is an order of magnitude more immoral than wasting other forms of food.

I am a vegetarian and have been for ten years, and my reasons for being vegetarian fall into objection to animal cruelty/factory farming, and environmental reasons. But I agree with you about waste, and theoretically, I would MUCH rather eat the meat myself than throw it away. The problem is that after so long not eating meat, I feel pretty sick and nauseous after eating it.

I don't think it's dumb, either, but I hate wasting good food. I get annoyed at people who don't like leftovers and refuse to eat them. As if what, delicious lasagna turns to poison on day two?

I will purposely cook small portions of certain foods in order to not create leftovers. I know I won't eat them because reheating certain things changes the texture to me and I can't eat them.

But creating leftovers and then wasting them is stupid. And wasteful obviously.
