Re: TW Rape and references to rape culture

In general:

Rape culture and individual instances of rape are distinct (though related) things, both of which are very bad. Rape culture is a feminist issue. But I do not think rape can be considered a female issue.

To reply specifically to something:

Why is no-one pointing out that these two sentiments are mutually exclusive. If rape was legitimately an issue for men, we would not live in a rape culture. we live in a rape culture because rape is first and for most a woman's rights issue. If rape was something men had to live with as a part of the culture, it would have been eradicated by now. Rape apology would not exist and rape would be universally considered indefensible. This is not a world we live in, we live in a world were less than half the population can and do shrug their shoulders at the concept of rape. We live in a rape culture because rape is a women's issue.

This seems deeply wrongheaded to me. The fact that we live in a deeply patriarchal culture that evaluates and judges men and women differently is in and of itself enough to explain the existence of rape culture. You don't need to claim that rape is not an issue for men to explain this. Culture treating male and female rape victims differently follows naturally from the existence of a patriarchal society. That doesn't mean that male rape victims don't exist. Jesus fucking Christ.

I was going to say the same thing, you said it better than I did.

Yes, but the culture treats women MUCH MUCH worse than it treats women? Which is why I say rape is not a mens issue.

DA

AYRT didn't say rape is a mens' issue, they said rape is not only a womens' issue. Rape is an issue for everyone because rape shouldn't happen.

Rape culture is predominantly a feminist issue though. How culture treats women would be rape culture.

lol yes it is so much easier for a male rape victim to get help, sympathy and understanding from this society than a female rape victim. such a non-problem for men...

oh you know what? I know you're trolling so whatever.

I'm not so sure about that. Men are even less likely to report being raped than women, because they're even less likely to be believed. Boys who are molested by women are considered "lucky" and not taken seriously. Men who are cajoled or forced into sex are considered "unmanly" and laughable and often lose friends over trying to confess being raped.

All of this is because of patriarchy and because of how men and women, masculinity and femininity, are viewed. Women are definitely disproportionately affected by that, and men are definitely still privileged over them. However, rape culture is the totality of attitudes toward rape that lead to a society where rape is common and viewed in many cases as either acceptable or not really rape. Since the rape of men is viewed as acceptable or not really rape in most cases, the rape of men is definitely part of rape culture.
