Maybe that's a US thing, since the ordinances for lawns thing is not a factor in Australia afaik, nor do people worry about too much vegetation carrying insects. (In the suburbs anyway, further out venomous snakes are an issue.) And yet still astroturf lawns are springing up here on the fanciest of houses like so many hideous weeds!

It is a US thing. Cause where I live, here in the South, we ALWAYS have issues with insects, mosquitoes being the biggest thing. Our climate is humid and hot and especially during the latter part of summer on into the fall, we get more rain on top of the heat, so it breeds the best, well, breeding grounds for them. So standing water and tall grass can be a major annoyance to us down here on top of the fact that we had had an outbreak of West Nile Virus back when I was in high school. And it persisted for a few years after. People got sick and we lost a good chunk of some of our bird populations, especially the Blue Jays.

So, well kept lawns or lawns that are fake help keep that down, along with the trucks that come out every year and spray mosquito and other pest deterrents in the neighborhoods.

It's why the city demands yards to be kept right, not to mention it'll make certain neighborhoods lose property values because they look kind of shitty.
