[Tim Drake, DC Comics]

Wow, your friend sounds really annoying about this.

Maybe you could agree not to talk to each other about anything Robinesque.

I don't even bring it up anymore. But I'm still reading their blog (as well as others' in the same vein) because other than that, they're really nice and fun to talk to. And then I can't help seeing those complaints and snide asides. I bite my tongue, but it's so annoying. That's why I had to vent.

I find stanning for comic characters to be kind of weird, especially if the specific identity the character takes is a legacy one. There are so many characters out there, how can you possibly stan for any of them? It's a veritable cornucopia of characters to love.

I always have to wonder which version they're talking about. Like, as written by whom? What era? You can usually tell by the characteristics mentioned, if they don't outright mention what their favourite stories were.

With characters that have a passing mantle though, I understand why they'd a specific fave, and get that there's a defensiveness regarding the newer/older candidates. Especially if that character was the first one under that name they'd read and identified with (Tim is a veritable mess by now, but def has this).

I don't know, I am a Dick Grayson fan and I've been following him through all sorts of incarnations, so it's doable? I mean, I have my favorite writers and all that, like everyone, but I still treat him as roughly the same character.

And I even understand it if people are annoyed that Tim is underserved right now. It sucks when it's a character you like, and I root for him to be written better. But yeah, the stanning has gotten so extreme that I'm like, "Sorry that nobody in the world loves him as much as you". >.>

Yeah, your friend sounds incredibly annoying about this.

Funny thing is that I've come across quite a bit of Tim stanning in that vein. Maybe they feed each other.

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-09-15 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah that's the thing, the fact that this isn't even directed at ONE person in particular is probably telling XD

(I mean, okay, it's mostly one person, but I've seen these sentiments from others too.)

(Anonymous) 2015-09-15 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe because Tim is relatable to a lot of people. Tech geek and dorky.
It would be hard to relate to Dick because he's the gorgeous golden boy, Damien the child assassin, and Jason the bad boy rebel.

I think Stephanie and Tim are the most relatable for people.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-15 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Well, at least he isn't Jason.

But yeah, that's some pretty intense can-do-no-wrong stanning right there.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-15 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
There are Jason stans, but at least I don't see them acting like he's entitled to anything.
I haven't been in fandom for awhile but remember a lot of Dick fans hating the new Nightwing for a time. And Tim fans hated something where he was acting really out of character...? I don't remember

(Anonymous) 2015-09-15 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Tim has really gotten the short stick in the new 52, but yeah, annoying. Especially the insulting other Robins.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-15 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
You're friend sounds really annoying especially since Tim has been shit since 2005, while Dick, Damian, and Stephanie (and Jason on the off chance he was written well) overtook him in interesting concepts.

Unpopular opinion time but Tim shouldn't have survived the reboot. Damian basically made him irrelevant and now he serves no purpose in the batfamily. Dick is the first/golden son, Jason is the black sheep/unfavorite/"failure" and Damian is the heir/rehabilitated son.

Tim used to have a place as the normal well-adjusted child but Identity Crisis did away with that and nu52!Tim is so awful and the compressed timeline makes no sense that killing him off would be a blessing (Jason is salvageable if LOBDELL would stop fucking writing him). And then they killed of Terry!Bats to give to Tim in attempt to make him interesting and it backfired even more.

Personally, it fascinates me that Tim has failed so hard in the reboot while Kyle Rayner (GL) another character that should have been eaten up by the reboot (all his friends are fucking gone!!! unlike Tim) is doing fine.

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-09-15 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah...I try to hold back on it because I don't want to crap on anyone's faves, but I feel similarly about Tim. Not that I want him to die, but that he's struggling for relevance HARD in the reboot. (I also agree with your rough classification of the Robins. Guess Tim could still be the "calm middle child", but of course you'd need a good writer to make that interesting. His Nu52 characterization really is a mess.)

Of course, the same people I'm talking about are also really adamant over that new Batman Beyond, because Tim being Batman is a big deal, because he was always meant to be, you see!!

Re: Kyle Rayner, I really liked him in Omega Men, it's huge shame it got cancelled.

S!A

(Anonymous) 2015-09-15 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
Preboot Tim tried to serve as the sane middle child but really meant he only started cribbing more of Dick's schtik. Then they tried to play him as a master martial artist and master strategist but those were Cass's and Jason's respective specialties. Then they just went FUCK IT, he's the smartest best detective of the bat and a gadgetry genius when all the batkids are up to par in deduction (Bab's being league ahead) and Damian is the gadgetry genius.

Poor Tim just didn't fit in anywhere outside of moping about Kon and serving as Jason's bullied punching bag. Then new52 just destroyed Tim beyond recognition, took away all his friendships, and ruined the only interesting about him by making him on the outs with the batfamily and having the best relationship with Jason - which is 5 million levels of stupid.

RE: Omega Man being cancelled is tragic and upsets me forever, especially since we were promised 12 issues. Maybe Tom King will be moved onto a GL book or Kyle will get a relaunched series :(

(Anonymous) 2015-09-15 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly, this is true. I pretty much like all the Robins and batfamily because they were unique, but Tim really feels like the weakest link lately. Sure it could be fixed if someone understands every characters place and strengths, but it just feels so out of sync.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-15 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, the Robin wars. I remember them. I remember someone similar except it was Dick fan hating in Jason. Or a Tim fan hating on Damien. I dunno, it was just really messy when one Robin gets better stuff than the others.
