Australia has a new PM

Malcolm Turnbull defeated Tony Abbott 54 to 44 last night.

I, for one, welcome our new sassy shark overlord.

Canadian Tory caucus needs to take notes, and party like it's 1993 again, IMO.

You're next, Harper!

I love spills, personally. Well. I love Lib spills. This spill. I love this spill.
I am maybe a bit happy right now.

Yeah, there's no trainwreck like a political trainwreck for entertainment value, amirite?? Especially when the failbar politicos finally give up hanging on by their fingernails. *side-eyes the Tory caucus* Can you say "non-confidence" boys and girls?

One thing that really sucks is how many parties calling themselves "Liberal" in the West these days are actually more right-wing than most blue Tories. Just muddies the already-confusing waters, AFAIC. Everything's shifted right. Everything.

Yeah. It confuses the hell out of foreigners when we're angry at the Liberal party for mocking climate change and blocking gay marriage legislation.

They are actually our "right" major party. Labor is our "left".

It's all pretty glorious. I can't look away. We're losing our Treasurer too, I believe. Good riddance.

See, our Liberals (Grits) used to be centre, now they're right-wing, and the Tories are far-right, because the actual Tories, which were just right-wing, merged with the far-right Reform Alliance way back when. The NDP started out being extreme left-wing (they were, no word of a lie, the Canadian Communist Federation), and now they're pretty much centre-right. You would think the Greens would be the far-left, which the leader pretty much is, but the Green Party platform seems the most centrist of the bunch. The Greens have maaaaaaaaaaaybe a 50% chance of picking up three seats in the election, but there's a better chance of pigs flying through the frozen wastelands of hell, than the Greens getting a majority vote, never mind the confidence of the House. Worse, our GG is the most partisan Tory GG since, like, the year eighteen-oh-dot, I don't even know, so he might just laugh in their faces, even if by some miracle, every single eligible voter turned out and ticked Green.

Also if said voters weren't turned away from the polls. Half a million voters WERE turned away from the polls ("legitimately") in the 2008 election, but they basically covered that up with everyone shrieking over the robocalls thing, which didn't even affect a fraction of that number. In the meantime, a significant portion of otherwise-eligible voters have lost their civic addresses between 2012-2015, thanks to "superbox" programs forced on/by/through Canada Post. Guess what you need to vote?

Your ballot, AND two pieces of ID/documentation with your civic address on it. So. Yeah.

TL;DR: Nobody knows what any political party really is anymore, and all the parties are laughing all the way to the bank anyway....

Heh, it's my entertainment. Can't decide whether it's because I'm a masochist, or because I'm ever-so-slightly insane. (Both. It's probably both.)

TY.

I think the novelty will wear off soon and I'll remember how much Turnbull should scare everyone, but for now I'm happy I won't have to listen to Tony's Terrible Speeches™.

It's nice to have a more neutral person on board.

Gay marriage is back on the table, I guess.

Sounds like he's already scheming with China to take over the world, so I don't know if I'd call him "neutral", but he's certainly more tactful. I appreciate his kind of smug. It's less obnoxious than Tony's.

Less extreme maybe.

And way more tactful. He could be the most racist person in the world but as long as he keeps his mouth shut and doesn't let his decisions be made off his personal opinions versus what he's advised are the best options/what the country wants - I couldn't care.

Abbott was disturbingly focused on his personal beliefs over everything he was advised.

I think the reshuffle going on should be a good shake up as well but tbh were probably going to keep seesawing on leaders until one starts keeping commitments/stops rocking the boats.

Yessss.

Yes to all of what you said.

We've needed some serious changes in ministerial roles since Tony dicked everyone about. Bishop needs to be somewhere she can be bitchy without damaging foreign relations, and Hockey needs to be sitting in the back quietly and keeping his hands off the books.

I just hope they don't start talking about resurrecting the corpse of Abbott the second Turnbull pisses them off.
Actually, no. Do that. I want to watch and laugh.

Lol it wouldn't last. Abbott is going to be deader than Rudd and Gillard combined.

Congrats Oz! Now everyone pray Canada can get its shit together to oust Harper.

He's not so much a fatbutt, although you may never want to google "Tony Abbott + speedos" for the sake of your eyes soul.

Good luck, Canadians! They could have Abbott, I guess. He's unemployed now.
