This is the first time in Australia both sides of politics have a leader that supports same sex marriage. I don't expect anything to happen any time soon, but lesser evil and all that.

If you mean Kim Davis, yes. And her lawyers make me lose even more faith in humanity. Not only are they just as homophobic, but they've pushed her to go further than she might have otherwise and have been using you to further their own career. I take offense at the homophobia and as a future lawyer I take offense at the abuse of the system and of their position.

Seconded on Kim Davis. I am so freaking sick and tired of people using the "It's my religious beliefs!" excuse to get out of doing something they find objectionable.

1, plenty of religious people manage to also support same-sex marriage. Somehow they manage to make it work, so I don't get why she can't.
2, the world cannot bend over backwards to cater to certain people's specific religious beliefs at every turn. At some point everyone will have to encounter/work with/serve people who don't fit into their particular worldview. Most of us learn how to deal with it, she can, too. Unless she wants to remain a shut-in all her life and surround herself only with people who follow her particular faith or something, that is.

And of course there's also the massive hypocrisy of her judging same-sex couples considering her personal past, but...yeah.

Yup. And all she had to do was resign. If she really couldn't issue the licenses due to her (sucky) morals, then resign. If you can't do your job you quit. You don't stay in the job and deny services to others.

It is the same as with birth control. Your religion ends where my life begins. My religion isn't the same as yours and you don't get to dictate what I do with my life.

Frankly, It think we already allow way too much in the name of freedom of religion.

EXACTLY.

I work in a bookstore. I sell people books that go against every fiber of everything I personally believe in (I'm not a religious person, though, in my case it's more political beliefs than anything else, but still...).

And yet do I stand there and harass them and make a big scene out of "My beliefs trump yours!" and whatnot and demand they cater to my worldview? No. I sell it, and move on with my life. If it bothered me that much, I'd, like you suggest, go find something else to do.

The birth control thing really pisses me off, too. If someone doesn't want to use it in their own lives, that's their choice and right, I don't care. But I don't get why they think they get to tell other people what they can and can't do with their own bodies. It never ceases to amaze me how the religious right/conservatives go apeshit over universal healthcare 'cause, "It's the government having a say over your personal health"...and then turn around and dictate what women can and can't do with their bodies. Bwuh?

(To say nothing of how utterly nonsensical it is that the same people bitching about people having more kids than they can afford get all bent out of shape at the idea of birth control. Y'know, the very thing that can help PREVENT that problem from happening in the first place.)

I had to not apply for a job at an actually pretty good Catholic nonprofit who does great immigration stuff because I was worried about health care and birth control since I'm on it for non-contraceptive reasons and could actually be in serious trouble if I even missed a few days, and I didn't want to deal with the hassle with them.

I just...don't get how that sort of stuff doesn't occur to people. I don't get how someone can't step outside their religious beliefs for even a minute to try and understand that just because their religion doesn't okay something doesn't automatically mean it's bad.

I think they think having anything to do with it is signalling approval. Which is ridiculous. It is doing your job. You just sold two people a cake. You aren't saying anything about their wedding.

This is a pet thing right now for me because when we were watching some sort of tv show the other day where a mother refused to go to her daughter's wedding to a woman because she thought it signaled her approval, my mother said she thought the mother made the right decision. So if I end up marrying a woman, my parents probably won't be there. Which is so fucked up. No. You are there because it is a special moment for your child. You go even if you don't like who the other person is marrying. You go no matter the gender of the person they are marrying. You go because they are your child.

Agreed. Again, I refer to my job. I sell books whose content I don't agree with to people. I never once have felt like by selling them, I'm endorsing those views somehow.

I really feel for you with your mom's attitude on this issue. It's one thing for complete strangers to treat someone like dirt-it still hurts, obviously, especially if they're in a position like that of Davis or a politician, where they can have some influence and sway over how they treat LGBT people. But at least you can still think, "Well, they're a stranger, they don't know me, they're obviously an idiot." in that instance.

But I will never, under any circumstances whatsoever, understand how one's own family can dismiss or turn their child away in regards to this issue. Ever. That is utterly cold and cruel and a shameful thing for someone who supposedly calls themselves a parent to do to their kid. If I had a kid, all I'd hope for and care about if they got married or were in a relationship with someone is that they're being treated well, they're treating their loved one well, and they're happy. So long as that's in place, we're good to go, as far as I'm concerned.

I'm really sorry you have to deal with that crap.

I don't mind the Kim Davis thing so much.

I mean, yes, she's a bigot and a horrible person, but I like that they put her in jail.

And I like that there seems to be a pretty universal consensus among all non-crazy-ass people that she's in the wrong, and an emphasis on finding a way to make sure gay people can get marriage licenses. Even people who were opposed to gay marriage.

True. My dad commented on it and he's pretty homophobic. And my mom made a comment at one point about people like her and those denying wedding cakes reminding both of them of racists in the 50s and 60s when they grew up. So there does seem to be some consensus that she's a nut even among people who are opposed to gay marriage.

That's part of the reason why her lawyers piss me off more. They are helping nuts like her and are going to be helping more such nuts.

Putting aside the homophobia thing for a second, the whole "selling cakes to gay people" thing is so lame because seriously, it's a freaking CAKE. If someone honestly thinks God is going to smite them down or whatever for simply selling a cake to a gay couple, then they should be asking themselves why their God they're supposed to be worshipping is so ridiculously petty.
