Oh, and I forgot to add that the courts have specifically said that immigration law is not criminal. Many of them are charged with related crimes. But when they are in immigration court they have no right to an attorney or any of the other rights that are specific to criminal and not civil law.

There was a really eye-opening segment on John Oliver's show the other night about how the whole "rights" thing in regards to criminal law can get really fucked up and how despite being read their Miranda rights they don't always get those rights when their cases actually come up-and they were talking about people born and raised here in that segment. I can't even begin to imagine how much worse and hellish the situation would be for immigrants, who wouldn't even get a chance at those sorts of rights in the first place.

Much the same in Australia, sad to say.

Ergh. I've heard a bit about how issues with certain groups of people are handled there (namely anything having to do with the Aboriginal population), so that sadly doesn't surprise me too much, but still...depressing to hear that nonetheless.

ayrt Australia's treatment of asylum seekers is beyond appalling. Cruel, inhumane, people are raped, people are killed, people are drowned, people self-harm, people commit suicide. Children too. I've seen it with my own eyes. I've done my part in trying to help. The legal system is completely #$%$#@ too, ex used to work in immigration law with refugees. Recently news story about one of the judges who denied procedural fairness and almost never found in favour of asylum seekers. We are bound by international law to help asylum seekers and we don't. All to score racist political points back home. Why I hate Tony Abbott so much, and his successor "cruel but necessary" Malcolm Turnbull won't be much better.
