(Anonymous) 2015-09-15 10:04 am (UTC)(link)*Nods* YES. This. Every time someone goes off with the, "Just use the legal means" argument, I always think about the stories of immigrants fleeing areas that are in the midst of civil wars or massive drug cartel situations or other serious, life-threatening, dangerous scenarios of that sort.
I don't know about anyone else, but if I'm running from a war-torn country with nothing but the clothes on my back and my family at my side, going through "proper legal channels" to get into another country probably isn't going to be the very first order of business for me. I just want to get somewhere, ANYWHERE, that's safer than where I currently am. Once I'm away from the danger and have kind of regrouped and settled a bit, then sure, I'd look into making my residency legal if I'm planning on staying in the country for a while, if not permanently.
But when I'm fleeing? No, not so much. And as others pointed out, even when people do use the legal means, there's a lot of red tape and hoops they have to jump through there, too, that can take ages to get sorted out. I don't blame people in those situations if they lose patience and just go, "Screw it."
The whole "criminals" argument is another one that makes me roll my eyes. No, I wouldn't want violent criminals from other countries coming in here, but hell, I don't want the violent criminals that are born and raised here to be out wandering around, either, so... Most immigrants aren't criminals, so I'm not about to single them out for extra close scrutiny. If they're here and not causing any trouble to anyone and just going about their daily business, then leave them the hell alone.
