In my fandom, the slash fans aren't as angry that their ship isn't canon as much as they angry that another is. If they can't get what they want then the rest of the fans shouldn't either so they must ruin the fandom for them. They'd be happy the het relationship vanishes even if their ship is not canon and even if everything gets turned into a big homophobic queer baiting fest.
It isn't about het only, though, because they made it clear they'd be pissed off if the story does have a canon gay couple but it's not their ship.
