I'm not quite sure what to make of this secret. Does it kill you because you sympathize with them? Or because you're annoyed by how much they carry on about it? The "Forever Alone" image gives no clues. Please clarify, OP!

I think it could go either way... they could be mocking the shippers or they could be sympathizing with them.

The 'Forever Alone' image makes me lean towards mocking, but who knows.

If the people in question spend a large portion of their time complaining about their ship not being canon then I could see why OP might be irritated, but simply being disappointed is not an overreaction.

Obviously everyone's ship can't be canon, but I do feel a bit bad for people who are invested in their ship becoming canon. (I don't need it, but there are instances where I would welcome it. That said, I also don't expect it.)

You mean they are ridiculous and you die laughing?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-15 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I laugh at them too.

Yeah, I don't get it either.

Sure, it might not be canon…but usually slash pairs get WAY more fic as a result.

And, in general, canon romances are pretty crappily written anyway (because they're usually underdeveloped side plots) so it seems like slash shippers get the better deal anyway.

As a slash shipper (and incidentally an actual gay person), I'll take the real life canon representation, please!

The grass is always greener on the other side. Some people would actually like to see a canon gay couple but some are content with more fanwork.

Personally I prefer more fanwork because I've had ships of mine become canon, and sometimes it's great but the creativity of fandom is usually more abundant and enjoyable. Unless your unfortunate to fall for a rare pair, in that case then I would want it to be canon.

Yeah... As much as I want to be passively supportive and say more canon gay pairings would be good... I am very, very cynical about how well romances are done in TV and movies. Computer games and books I have slightly less cynicism, because they have more breadth for romance, but it varies from game-to-game, book-to-book too.

So TL;DR, I have more faith in finding good romance in fanfic.

So funny someone's pissed off that homo relationships are way underrepresented in canon. Please look up history of why slash.

I mean, sure, butthurt shippers are amusing, but in this case you sound more like a dick. Or a dickish troll.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-15 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Fandom has changed so much from my first days in it.

Back then no body excepted a slash ship to go canon. It was unheard of, they were just happy to play in the playground.

Now people bitch that everyone's homophobic if their crack ship doesn't go canon. And Fandom actually has influence on the some of the shows because fans will bring it with them to cons and then the writers will tease them.

Oh boy. Both states are pretty sad.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-15 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't really see how slash fans are doing anything wrong though?

Sending death threats or harassing the creators is wrong, yeah. But all shippers do that (HELLO Zutara shippers and Harmonians!).

But why shouldn't they petition for their ship to be canon as long as it's done respectfully?

I mean, if the characters have only 2 second of screen time together then yeah, it's obviously a dumb crackship. But if they already have a deep bond, why not ask?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-16 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not really comfortable with shippers using LGBT as an excuse to whine about their ship. I suppose there's some legitimate discontentment about under-representation but imo most slash shippers who whine about it don't seem like they genuinely care about LGBT representation.
And so it just feels.. kinda gross.

Like how in the old days how some people claimed they want to see gay marriage legalized because they want to see their OTP get married or something.

sorry i didn't clarify. het shippers who whine to the creator about how their ship needs to be canon are annoying lil shits too.

they're writing their story, not yours.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-15 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, dumb fans should be happy just to ~imagine~ in the face of gross underrepresentation of LGB people/relationships. Now they are getting so uppity, demanding that gayness be included in the canon!

I hate when unintended ships do go canon because of fandom because there's no buildup to it.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-16 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
As a diehard shipper, I hate when some huge obstacle comes along and makes it much more difficult to ship a non-canon pairing than it previously was. That has, once or twice, caused me what could maybe be deemed a "shipping crisis" of the less severe sort.

But yeah, when people get so up in their own headcanon about a ship that they can't bear to acknowledge it isn't actually canon, I do kind of roll my eyes at that. As diehard as I am and as deeply invested in my OTPs as I am, I never allowed myself to forget that my headcanon/fanon is NOT canon and is very, very, very, very unlikely to ever be canon.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-16 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
As it happens, I'm involved in two fandoms were the exact inversion is happening: two femmeslash ships have become canon (Korrasami from LoK and Clexa from The 100) and the het ships either sank or don't seem likely to happen.

And what do you know? The het shippers WON'T STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT IT.

Long story short: people will always freak out over ships. I find myself growing more and more sceptical about people who claim it's all about representation. (Of which there should be more of, naturally - I'm just deeply cynical about those who claim that's what they're really clambouring for).

What's the deal in The 100 fandom? I thought Bellarke was still going pretty strong? I'm not really in the fandom so I'm curious.

Yeah, people always give slash shippers so much shit but het shippers behave just as badly with the added luxury of a better shot at canon.

My fandom had a het ship become canon but a lot of fandom think it's bullshit and criticize it, the shippers of that ship get all butthurt and play the victim and get catty with everyone else because they falsely assumed that canon status would protect their ship from hate.

I'll ship anything as long as it has chemistry, but m/m and f/f ships almost never become canon. So yeah, even though I'd like for some more equality it does still sting when there are people who actually believe a m/m or f/f ship actually have a chance at canon. Unfortunately the majority of shows/movies/books are still stuck in the heteronormative mindset.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-16 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
You know, at first I didn't like those kinds of fans either, I thought they are too invested in fictional characters, and can be pretty hilarious. After a while though you start to understand how they feel after hearing "there can't be gays in this thing" over and over. Yes there are those who don't give a damn about representation and just want to lord about their OTP being canon, but I would guess they are just the vocal minority.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-16 08:15 am (UTC)(link)
" What makes it so hard is not that you had it bad, but that you're that pissed that so many others had it good."

In my fandom, the slash fans aren't as angry that their ship isn't canon as much as they angry that another is. If they can't get what they want then the rest of the fans shouldn't either so they must ruin the fandom for them. They'd be happy the het relationship vanishes even if their ship is not canon and even if everything gets turned into a big homophobic queer baiting fest.
It isn't about het only, though, because they made it clear they'd be pissed off if the story does have a canon gay couple but it's not their ship.

Personally? I am so used to shipping non-canon that I just don't care.

Given that I tend to be laid back to the point of apathy, I don't usually care about getting into ship wars. I simply keep going my way, hunting fic for the pairings I like and leave the fighting to other people.

But I do have an ever-growing streak of cynicism and I acknowledge that at this point in time, it is still hard for gay pairings to be canon, and also that often canon romances are written terribly, especially in TV and movies.
