Yeah, I don't get it either.

Sure, it might not be canon…but usually slash pairs get WAY more fic as a result.

And, in general, canon romances are pretty crappily written anyway (because they're usually underdeveloped side plots) so it seems like slash shippers get the better deal anyway.

As a slash shipper (and incidentally an actual gay person), I'll take the real life canon representation, please!

See, I get wanting representation it's just that…most canon ships are so poorly and boringly written that, for me, if the choice was between a poorly-written canon queer ship or a thriving fan fiction community, I'd choose the fan fiction community.

I guess I'm just not that keen on representation as a goal. Maybe it's because I'm Arab but whenever we're represented, the vast majority of the time it's not don't very well and I'd honestly just rather have white people fill the roles, to be honest.

But I respect that you may feel differently. (I'm a straight girl so it's not really my place to say what's right or wrong about LGBT representation).

NAYRT but, as a lesbian, I would rather have the canon ship, not just because representation but also because queer ships becoming canon really pisses off the smug homophobes who act like all slash shippers are straight fangirls with too-tight ~yaoi goggles~ who don't care about the characters as much as het shippers do.

I can never really figure who's allowed to use "slurs" or not. Like, I thought "queer" had been put in the "not slur" category the way "person of color" was -- since white people use person of color too.

But I guess queer is like the n-word then?

Although even the n-word is weird because although black people have reclaimed it, I've been told I should use the work sandni**** even though I've been called that -- which is weird considering I thought it was generally accepted that you could reclaim slurs that had been thrown at you. Not in that case though apparently.

If you're still around, let me explain this, as a queer person.

Queer is still used as a slur. Not as much, but since it's still being used that way, and because it WAS a MUCH worse slur in the past, there actually is, within the LGBT+ community, a lot of intracommunity argument over it. Younger people (I'd say 35-40 and under, but especially in teens to early 30s) are more likely to want to reclaim the word. Older people, who were around when queer was one of the worst slurs, a lot simply don't get it.

To make an analogy, since you've said you're a woman, let's take the word bitch. Myself and a lot of other people have decided to reclaim the word. I have some older feminist friends, late 40s-60s, who absolutely cannot understand why we'd want to reclaim that word. This isn't purely generational, because I have run into people of all ages who don't like reclaiming language and feel the words should just fall out of use entirely. In any group that's discussing stuff like this, there will be people on both sides.

So, when there's argument about it within the community, that you're not part of, yeah, it's something you should not use. In part, because while in this context I can tell that you're not meaning it as a pejorative, it might not be obvious in other uses. Also, and I apologize that this is blunt, it's not your word to reclaim. Does this help explain things better?

For what it's worth, I'm the first anon who replied to you and I have no problem with queer being used as a catch-all. I use it myself, it feels much cleaner to describe the concept of "not-straight" without having to divide into gay, lesbian, bisexual, etc. It's only problematic when people either a) call you a "queer" or b) are homophobic and using it.

Obviously you can use the word yourself if you like, but I don't think there's anything "clean" or appropriate about encouraging straight people to use it.

If I identify as queer (which I do) then why shouldn't straight people respect and refer to that identity? Not to mention, it's used more often in academia, as in "queer studies" or "queer readings" of a text, and in this case, the word is infinitely more useful than something like "LGBT reading" because that assumes active identities whereas queer doesn't demand categorization (for example, you can do a queer reading of Dracula, but it's more presumptuous to argue that Dracula "identifies" as bisexual or something). Since, unlike many other slurs, queer is actually used as an identity (unlike, say, faggot), it does not have to be offensive.

I meant to say that encouraging straight people to use it as a catch-all is inappropriate. Of course you can tell straight people to call you personally whatever you want them to call you. But it's not okay to refer to an entire community with a word that many in that community still view as a slur.

I refer to them that way. And I am perfectly fine with straight people doing so as well, provided they use the term respectfully. There is a difference between using it as a slur (as a noun) and using it as a correct description.

I have never seen slash shippers attack female characters in a way that het shippers didn't attack a female character in a rival het ship.

Slash shippers have no more internalized misogyny than het shippers. Everyone bashes on the rival characters. Look at Ron Weasley -- he's a white dude and he also gets it from the Harmonians (hence why the trope is called "Ron the Death Eater" -- it's THAT bad).

Character bashing has nothing to do with social justice.

Yeah, I feel like in slash fandoms there's more of a tendency to sideline female characters, or turn them into shippers on deck. Bashing is frowned upon because slash shippers already have a complex about their pairings being non-canon (and likely never becoming canon).

On the other hand, tell me more about how Rosa fans treat Martha (and vice versa), or IchiRuki fans and Orihime.

THANK YOU. My god, claiming that only slash shippers throw female characters under the bus is as hilarious as it is completely wrong. ALL shippers do this in the face of rival pairings. Period, the end. I have personal experience shipping het pairings in what you mentioned - in particular, Cloud/Aeris, and I can guarantee that no slash shipper was ever as vicious as the Cloud/Aeris vs Cloud/Tifa ship wars.

Holy shit the Aeris vs. Tifa wars - I shipped Cloud/Tifa but also liked Cloud/Aeris. You can imagine how THAT went down.

More like straight people feel threatened by LGBT representation/interest. Great that you're so concerned with young teen shippers who you know, almost definitely aren't sexist, but are just immaturely dismissing the "competition" as young teens do.

And what do feminists have to do with this? Try asking actual gay people (e.g. me) who cannot fucking wait for the day when two characters with chemistry have a fighting chance at ending up being the endgame despite their genders.

Not to mention that, as one anon said above, het shippers attack the female rivals in pretty much the exact same way and male rivals get the same shit from all kinds of shippers... so WHOOP there goes that argument!

Yeah, it all comes down to "You are wrong for shipping what I don't ship.".

The grass is always greener on the other side. Some people would actually like to see a canon gay couple but some are content with more fanwork.

Personally I prefer more fanwork because I've had ships of mine become canon, and sometimes it's great but the creativity of fandom is usually more abundant and enjoyable. Unless your unfortunate to fall for a rare pair, in that case then I would want it to be canon.

Yeah... As much as I want to be passively supportive and say more canon gay pairings would be good... I am very, very cynical about how well romances are done in TV and movies. Computer games and books I have slightly less cynicism, because they have more breadth for romance, but it varies from game-to-game, book-to-book too.

So TL;DR, I have more faith in finding good romance in fanfic.
