[20th Century Boys]

Haven't seen the movies but I have no idea how you'd adapt it into movie form without running into those problems. I mean, the movie is hard to follow if you didn't read the manga? The manga is hard to follow for people who did read the manga. I love it deeply but it is, in many ways, a completely absurd manga. It was completely absurd to try to tell a story like that. And with casting - I mean, it's a huge cast, you're just not going to be able to deal with everyone.

I hope they got God right, though. God owned.

I'm afraid God is one of the characters that ended in the background in the last two movies and even in the first his part was cut out by a lot.

Whaaaaaat. That sucks.

What? Nooooo! God was the coolest!

And in a lot of ways kind of the epitome of what I loved about the series - the sort of wild inventiveness, the idea of all these pockets of both incredible weirdness and world-historical significance in the most mundane circumstances possible.

My biggest gripe was the song. The song was such a letdown! THAT was what became the mega-ultra-hit? That?
I mean I guess the idea is that since it was the only song left everybody loved it, but yeesh. Not exactly high endorsement.

(I haven't actually watched the movies, but I looked up the song...)

I don't think any song could have lived up the hype tho

True, but still. I'd have been okay with anything halfway decent.

It's like how in Macross Frontier the fact that the ~super special music~ that manages to bridge the insurmountable gaps between alien races is crappy Jpop is ludicrous, but at least most of the songs were pretty fun and catchy.
This song was just so boring.

Well.. most of the point of the song is that it can't really be that good. Since it was composed on the fly by Kenji, who has said isn't that good, and who got booed and shut down every time he sang it pre-End of the World.

I always tought the reason why it was such a hit not only because it was the last song left that wasn't Friend approved (There was that other one, the one that Kenji's ex lead singer sang?) but because people who kept it going kept building the message behind said song a lot.

It makes /sense/, really, it's just kind of a bad song XD maybe if I watched the movies and saw it more in context it would work better emotionally.
Maybe it's also a result of "Hollywood songwriting", where characters jotting off songs that later become hits are actually decent songs, so here having a 'lousy song' be an actual lousy song surprised me...
Kind of like Hollywood Ugly being very different from actual not-pretty.

Having not seen this film all I can really say is you aren't wrong...he IS pretty.

Maybe one day I will get around to watching it. (Knowing me, probably not, but he looks worth it.)

I love the randomness of today's secrets!!
I hadn't read the manga prior to seeing the first film but I was hooked. The next films were harder to follow and yeah, didn't live up to the first but I still liked them.
