Re: The Late Show with Steven Colbert

Was he like that on the Colbert Show too? I'm very pessimistic and cynical, so I find the opposite very refreshing. He manages to share my political views, at least mostly I think, and mock politicians, while at the same time seeming hopeful and happy about possibilities and about the future. I really enjoy that.

I think he was, yeah. He always had fun with the musical guests and joined in on songs sometimes (and I always LOVED it when he did that), and you could tell how utterly thrilled he was anytime he interviewed people who were interested in scientific/geek/nerd-related topics on his show. He was always so giddy and genuinely interested in talking to them. He really had a lot of fun with the crazy world he created on his show.

And on days the real world news was utterly shitty, he always found ways to either address it in honest yet hopeful ways, or just found ways to make people laugh and get their minds off the crap they dealt with in the real world for half an hour.

I'm a generally optimistic person, so I'm always happy when I see other people with that worldview (I certainly understand the pessimistic/cynical mindset, though, of course, and some days it's hard to keep myself from not going to that attitude!). And like you said, I like that we're in general agreement politically, too. As for being hopeful about the future, I think he has the same reasoning I do-I just always think about all the other horrible stuff people have managed to get through and survive in the past, and figure, if they managed to make it through their hellish experiences, we'll be able to as well. It may take a while, sure, and it won't always be pretty, but I like to think we'll get there eventually :).
