That is not a tumblr exclusive thing. I see misinformation on the news all the time and people don't have the intelligence to fact check. Not to mention twitter, facebook, or wherever else...

Yeah, but on, say, Livejournal/Dreamwidth, you can post a top-level comment on the post spreading misinformation, and anybody who reads the post will have a chance to see it. On a message board thread, your correction goes into the conversation, and anyone following the conversation will see it.

On Tumblr, on the other hand, your correction only gets seen by anyone who follows you. If you're not Internet-famous or a social butterfly, this could mean less than a dozen people -- while the big name fan who just reposted the misinformation gets a thousand pairs of eyes on it. Absolutely no one digs through the thousands of 'X liked this post' and 'Y reposted this' on the off chance someone added a comment that completely undermines it.
