It's fake in the sense that they don't know me. The random people walking into my askbox have no meaningful relationship with me. They're not there for me when I need them.
Leaving a cute message doesn't demand anything from you. You drop it and go. To me, compliments on my art is sincere, because there's something behind it. I know why they are happy.

When I was actually miserable and half-suicidal nobody bothered saying anything. They're not there for me, they're there for themselves. I'd rather not deal with it.

Woooooowwwwww, projecting much? You seriously have issues, and if that's you attitude towards people being nice, that's probably why you never see anyone being sincerely nice -- you've already decided they're their for themselves and not for you, so if they were being sincerely nice, you have pre-emptively blinded yourself to it and made it impossible for you to see niceness.

Yeah, I get what you're saying. tumblr interactions seem really superficial to me. Like people are way more interested in your output than anything else about you.

Yes! superficial is the word I wanted.

On tumblr if you stop output for some time, that's it, everybody forgets. I'm ok with tumblr being all about looking at pretty art, but I don't like pretending it's much beyoond that.

Personally I appreciate people who go out of their way (even just a little bit) to spread positivity (even just a little bit). I do agree with you that whatever anyone says in that context is going to be fairly on-the-surface. And yeah, sometimes when I see a comment that seems like an incredibly personal peptalk, I think "God, I never want anyone to say that to me." Like when anons tell someone they're "an incredible person" and that they "have so many people who love them" or something, that feels a bit...like...thanks for being nice and meaning well but no thanks?

I just don't think it's all as black-or-white as you're making it out to be. The options aren't just "sincere" or "insincere." I think most nice comments, both online and in RL, come from a place of preferring to leave most people a tiny bit happier than when you encountered them, especially if they're someone you know a little and actually like. That's not insincere, it's just a casual sort of kindness.

You do sound pretty cynical, anon, but I don't really agree with the other anons who are jumping on you about it. Unless you're one of those people who would post about how depressed you were and then snap at people who tried to comfort you. Those people really are taking their issues out on others, and it sucks.
