I'm about ready to give up on this webcomic (The Dreamer). After an understandable 1+ year hiatus, updates resumed...starting with a single page for our patience. 1/week, with more as Patreon goals are met. Okay, you want to keep your buffer. Understandable.

But now we're out of updates again because the update wasn't finished? Where did that stingy buffer go?

There's not exactly a lot of media revolving around the American Revolution, though. Same reason I forgive TURN for a lot.

It doesn't help that my other main webcomic is Unsounded, which blows this one out of the water.

Um...people can't help getting sick OP. Stingy buffer or no, you are not entitled to an update when they are sick and wanna wait until they get home.

I think they're saying that obviously there wasn't a buffer, because if there had been updates would have happened even though she was sick.

Not necessarily. Buffer or not, if you are sick? You feel like shit. And if this writer did indeed have that bad a bout of food poisoning? Uh, yeah, no, they wouldn't have been able to get to their computer or what ever it is that they use to draw.

they could have a script to move the files from a private folder to the public website one

that's how other comics do it

(of course that if someone's sick their health comes first, not computer things, that should go without saying)

The author is not the only person involved in the comic/site, or at least that is my impression. Even so, if there really is a buffer, it's not like the technology to schedule updates doesn't exist.

They may not have it set up that way. Some people like to post updates right after they have finished them.

DA

Wait, then what's the buffer for then? I thought that meant you have a backlog of stuff to post during dry periods?

Yeah the slow update process is frustrating. On the upside Unsounded continues to be amazing and I am still shocked but how much Ashley puts out on a consistent basis.

It's really annoying reading webcomics and being told there will be a certain update schedule and then getting lied to about it. There's nothing demanding that they finish it, but the communication helps. Order of the Stick went through a period of difficulty where the author wasn't able to update, so he basically said "updates come when they come" and you know what? I check occasionally to see where it's at (although it has improved since his health has, which is great since it's an awesome comic) and have no compunction.

I guess seeing people with real buffers and keeping their promises in update schedules with high quality output makes me less inclined to really enjoy comics that don't.

Unsounded is astounding! I can hardly believe such art quality and depth of story is humanly possible.

Omg I remember reading this. Can't remember why I stopped but I imagine it had to do with something like what you said.

I would withdraw my patron tbh. That stuff comes out monthly, if they're not meeting their goals/milestones why give the money?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-20 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
This. If you're paying for regular updates and not getting them, you're not getting what you're paying for, so why keep on paying?

Wow. This is still going. I guess if I ever catch up on it I'll read slow.
