I hate to be "that guy", but...

Hobbit years =/= human years. Frodo was 33 at the party when Bilbo vanished, and 33 was considered his "coming of age", i.e. the transition from childhood to adulthood. That would be more like one's late teens to mid twenties by human reckoning. Even then, you can argue that his adventure hadn't really started yet. He inherited the Ring and Bag End, yeah, but seventeen more years passed before he sets off with Merry and Pippin.

But you just can't resist being a know-it-all jerk?

I don't think there's anyone in this thread who didn't know this

Er... I didn't know that. I've seen the LOTR movies and liked them but I'm not super into Tolkien or all the backstory. The movie doesn't say that much time passed between Bilbo disappearing and Frodo leaving the Shire.

Correction: most people in this thread know this.

I wasn't trying to say that it's some sort of must-know thing, though! Just that in the context of the comments above, the difference between human years and hobbit years doesn't really matter.

Oh, I agree! It's a great secret and it made me smile. I just wasn't aware there was a big difference between hobbit ages and human ages and I didn't think that was necessarily common knowledge if you weren't a serious fan.

The movies, like a lot of movies do (especially historical movies) compressed the timeline. The Hobbit did the same with the backstory about the dwarves, while at the same time making Thorin older.

Basically? The movies and the books differ.

Yeah, I'm sure you really hate being "that guy." You, sir, are a party-pooper.

Just going to point out that the implication of the 17-year gap is that OP is not, in fact, older than Frodo when he set off on his adventure

Re: I hate to be "that guy", but...

(Anonymous) 2015-09-19 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
True, but the OP didn't seem aware of that, nor of the fact that 33 in Hobbit years isn't the same as being 33 in human years. They used the wrong reasoning, but managed to arrive at the correct conclusion anyway!

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-09-19 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I was aware of that, actually, but simplified my secret just so it wasn't so wordy.

Fair enough.

Haha came here to say this, actually. His adventure started when he was 50. Not 33.

Don't wait until you're 50, OP. It's already hard enough to get up in the morning at 40.

I did wonder at what point someone would say this.

You're that obnoxious Tolkien fan tbh.
