India and Pakistan are East Asia? Since... when?

It makes zero sense for Bond to be a Muslim. He could be Middle-Eastern, absolutely. But Muslim? When he casually has sex with girls, drinks alcohol, kills people, etc? He would have to be a very, very liberal Muslim, which is possible, sure. But then what is the point of making him Muslim if he isn't going to practice is anyway?

Interesting that your "no women allowed" genderswap club consists of the three top characters where there is any genderswap controversy at all. Very interesting indeed.

Do you feel the same way about ostensibly Christian characters who violate guidelines for the Christian religion? Because that happens all the time. Why do you think that we should only allow Muslim characters who follow the practices of Islam perfectly?

I would be equally confused if Bond were a practicing Christian. It's one thing to have a cultural background, so if you were really intent on Bond being maybe from a Muslim family and so was "culturally" Muslim not not actually practicing. But why make a point of Bond being Muslim only to have him not really be a Muslim? It's not like we're creating a new character from scratch here. I have no attachment to Bond at all, but he's still an established character. Make him any race, whatever, but change him culturally to a significant degree, why not just make a completely new character in that case?

And if we do, then okay, we're changing Bond's image pretty drastically. Fine. But then why the heck does OP draw the line at making Bond a woman?

Okay. You really can't see the double standard, apparently, or maybe you aren't from the U.S. There are lots (oh god so many) people who self identify as Christian who have no problems doing things that the Bible says is a no-no. The problem is that you think YOU are the authority in defining "who's really a ________" and the thing is... you're not.

A Bond who was a non-practicing Muslim sounds very on point for a lot of people in the UK who are second generation immigrants. It's an interesting update, there doesn't need to be "a point" beyond that. Why give Bond a backstory? Why have his family estate in a remote area of Scotland? Why give him a different gun, a different car, a different anything? Because it's new and potentially interesting, that's why.

I don't know why OP would draw the line at a female Bond and that doesn't seem particularly relevant to anything I've said, so... *shrugs*

If those characters are actually serious about their Christian faith, then yes, I have a huge problem with them being depicted as violating the tenets, especially if they're violating those tenets without a whole lot of angst about it.

But there are so few characters in media who are actually seriously practicing Christians that it's pretty much a non-issue. Unless they're the bad guy.

The Bible says "Thou shalt not kill". Ask yourself how many "seriously practicing Christians" are pacifists. The fact is, most Christians in this country do not have a problem with killing in specific contexts, such as war and perhaps even the death penalty. They might rationalize that this isn't what the Bible really means, but that's all it is, a rationalization. Yet they don't necessarily consider themselves to be poor Christians for being this way, it's just that they define their Christian identity differently than you do.

Bond gets married in one of the books so it's entirely possible that you could have a married Bond who happens to be a Muslim. He could be culturally Muslim but non-religious.

Personally, I think he's more likely to be Hindu than Muslim.

"Asian" in British terminology means originating in the Indian subcontinent. Chinese/Japanese are usually just called that.
