I can see saying that people should consider Asian actors as well as black actors, but I don't see how you get to the point of saying that Bond shouldn't be black and definitely should be Asian. Like, I get that you would prefer an Asian Bond, but that doesn't mean a black Bond is wrong.

Also in general my feeling on this stuff is that I would be totally cool with any of those casting decisions, but I would also be fine with them casting another white dude. Because that's who the character has been, but also because it's really weird to treat this one specific thing as the only means to the end of increasing diversity. That's where I've always felt kind of weird about the Doctor Who genderswap conversation. Casting a female Doctor would be great. But there's this undercurrent of, like, "WHAT THE FUCK, WHY ISN'T THE DOCTOR ALREADY A WOMAN, HOW THE FUCK DO THEY DARE DO THIS IN THIS DAY AND AGE, THE DOCTOR MUST BE A WOMAN" going on and I'm just kind of baffled by it.

Agreed. I personally can't see a female James Bond but I can go with non-white Bonds. Gay Bond would be a (fun) stretch however.

I could rock transmale Bond. Or just, when we get a transmale actor who has the gravitas, have a transmale actor in the role and not say anything about it.

That said, a Black bond is easier for one major reason: Black Bond can more easily have the surname Bond. An Asian Bond would have people asking how he got the name and answering that would mean some busywork with the backstory. But Skyfall changed a lot of stuff so...

I don't mind black Bond but to me it's not much different from white Bond to be perfectly honest. Black people are all over Hollywood as good guys. So while I am not bothered by it, I do not really care either and don't feel like celebrating.

It always baffles me when people feel strongly about the characters' gender, too. Unless gender plays a meaningful role in the narrative, how can it be integral to a character's personality?

I don't think people are necessarily saying "Bond must be played any black guy, Idris Elba is a black guy, good enough". I think a lot of them are saying "Idris Elba would be a good Bond because he's Idris Elba".

I think he'd be pretty good, personally.

Why do you think the Doctor and Sherlock Holmes should be only male? I think a female Doctor or female interpretation of Sherlock Holmes would be cool.

It makes sense to have an Asian Bond, I agree. But it doesn't follow (to me, anyway) that Bond shouldn't be black. You don't have to cast roles based on who the largest minority group is, you know.

It makes zero sense for Bond to be a Muslim. He could be Middle-Eastern, absolutely. But Muslim? When he casually has sex with girls, drinks alcohol, kills people, etc? He would have to be a very, very liberal Muslim, which is possible, sure. But then what is the point of making him Muslim if he isn't going to practice is anyway?

Interesting that your "no women allowed" genderswap club consists of the three top characters where there is any genderswap controversy at all. Very interesting indeed.

I personally just don't see Idris Elba as Bond. He's a fine actor and I wouldn't mind if Bond were a different ethnicity, but he just doesn't feel right for the character. No idea why. Bit too serious maybe? Though the last few Bond movies have been pretty serious too...He's a bit too solid, trustworthy. Bond should have a slippery quality.

I don't have a horse in this race because I don't care about Bond. I do find it funny, however, that you don't like female Sherlock because that's been done a few times. He's also been a dog. And a mouse. I dunno, Sherlock being random shit is, like, how I view the character. It's hilarious.

Nah. Muslims will never truly be British. Christians, Sikhs, Hindus, Jains and every other religion on this Isle capable of living in peace as a secular country yup. Muslims no.

Besides 6% isn't exactly a huge percentage is it? For it to be true underrepresentation there would have had to be 20 white James Bonds. As he's Scottish perhaps even more before we're anywhere close.

I like Idris but I hate James Bond so who cares
The author saying Idris can't play him because he's too street, or whatshisname saying Idris is not 'english english' can fuck off now though.
Idris is british and after they cast Craig it's too late to nitpick about movie Bond. Either way, Elba IS british. When will people understand that ethnicity and race are two different things and not mutually exclusive.

So Bond should either be white or Asian, but he can't be black, because? lol I get the point you're trying to make, I think, but I would assume the whole point of diversity and inclusiveness in casting means that an actor isn't excluded as possible candidate based solely on ethnicity, even if that ethnicity is a minority. But I agree with your no. 2. There's also Chiwetel Ejifor.

Um, I can only think of a couple of British Indian actors: Jimi Mistry (Ella Enchanted) and Naveen Andrews (Lost) and neither of them would be a terrible choice, but I think I know more British Indian actresses and I think a couple of them might be interesting in the role: Indira Varma and Archie Panjabi.

But what's wrong with a black British actor? If you don't like Idris Elba, what about Adrian Lester? I mean, yeah, it doesn't have to default to black if you don't want another white actor, but there's nothing wrong with considering it.
