IDK, considering maleness intrinsic to Holmes' character makes a lot more sense to me than considering maleness intrinsic to the Doctor's, when the Doctor's the character who comes from a species that can canonically change bodies entirely, down to sex. (And presumably gender, though I've seen meta both ways about Missy and the Corsair.)

Yeah, that's fair! I'm not a part of the fandom, so I'm not going to offer any opinions here. It's just that with Holmes, the novelty of the opinion took me aback. Whovians seem to have quite a lot of debates about the Doctor's gender, but this has never been an issue in the SH fandom.

Holmes has had a lot of adaptations. He's been a mouse, a doctor, a psychic, a modern detective...It's not beyond the realm of possibility that he could be adapted as a woman sometime. I think it'd be fun to see what life is like for a female Sherlock Holmes, probably different in some ways.

He already has been a woman! See: My Dearly Beloved Detective, a Soviet TV production about fem!Holmes and fem!Watson :D

I'm not too fond of it - especially not in comparison to the classic Soviet Holmes - but it is there, and it is subtitled.

I have nothing against genderswapped Holmes but in general, the more conservative the era in regard to gender roles, the harder I think a believable genderswap is. Much of Holmes as a character and Holmes as stories is wrapped up in the era he's from, and those came with certain circumstances and roles. Female Captain America is harder for me to swallow for the same reason; no matter how much the character is for equality, his original circumstances weren't.

Could someone do it, yeah, why not? How much of it is going to be accurate to the original, I don't know. If it's going to be set in the same era and impress historical gender roles, I'd have an easier time with Captain America the Supermouse in 1940s Mouse Society vs Mouse Nazis than Female Stephanie Rogers the American Soldier. If you ignore the historical circumstances, do whatever - the base is very far from canon to begin with.

I don't understand your point. Sherlock BBC, Elementary, and House were all Holmes adaptations set in the modern day and are great successes. Accuracy to the original flew out the window at some point.

My point was that I have a personal opinion, but other people can do whatever they want.

How concerned exactly are these series, Captain America included, with historical accuracy? I'm gonna go ahead and state that accuracy is not their number one priority. After all, we're talking about superheroes with superpowers. I'm pretty sure we can sort out a situation where a female Captain America was possible. Likewise, Holmes is basically a "superpowered" genius. Why couldn't the character be a woman? It's still fiction, and it's not like women were kept locked away in towers back then, or ever.

I think I already addressed that.

Something being hard for me personally to swallow is neither a judgment nor an insistence that things be done my way, don't get offended.

NAYRT

They don't really sound offended.

Oh, sorry, I meant something more like

"No offense, but something being hard for me personally to swallow is neither a judgment nor an insistence that things be done my way, don't get offended."

As a response to "why couldn't it be a woman?" It can. Sure. Why not? I said that already.

"No offense, but something being hard for me personally to swallow is neither a judgment nor an insistence that things be done my way."*

My brain is on the fritz today.

I never said he can't be adapted as a woman. I said it makes more sense to consider that a sticking point for Holmes than for a time-travelling alien whose species' schtick is entirely changing their physical form when fatally injured, up to and including canonical sexswap for several members of that species.

It's not a sticking point for me either way - I'd actually love to see a well-done female!Holmes adaptation - but imo it's less bizarre than people flipping out over the (fan theorized) possiblity of a female Doctor.
