I don't think we're supposed to agree with Joel, tho? Like, we're supposed to understand why he made that choice and most players seem to sympathize and be like "Wow, I'm pretty sure that was the wrong decision but if I was him and this was real I don't know if I would have made the right one", but the narrative isn't saying "Lol yeah fuck the Fireflies amirite"

I think at the very, very least we are supposed to sympathize with the decision.

I did not sympathize. It cemented my hatred for that game and it's shallow attempts at emotional manipulation. If you have to seriously come up with a scenario that has no chance of ever happening in real life to get your audience to react emotionally, that is a huge fail in my book.
