Re: Interpretations on Canon that you just don't get
I've seen a disturbing amount of people seem to argue that Celestia is more at fault, and essentially blaming Celestia for a lot of Sunset's flaws, and claiming that Celestia was hard to please and an unfair teacher.
I will admit that Celestia probably should have explained more about WHY Sunset wasn't ready. But let's not forget, it was established that Sunset was arrogant, thought she was better than people, and obviously thought she deserved or was owed princesshood. I think in one of the tie in books it was explained that Sunset thought her cutie mark meant that she was supposed to succeed Celestia.
But still, Sunset was an arrogant jerk who thought herself better than others. And let's keep in mind, Celestia was trying to train a student to eventually be a Princess. Possibly a successor or leader of her country.
If your were in her place, and your student constantly demanded power, treated others as beneath her and acted full of herself, would you consider giving her a royal position that comes with a great deal of power? Especially after your own sister abused her powers in a jealous fit and you had to banish her.
Also the arguments that Celestia was an egomaniac and wanted Sunset to humble herself completely to her. I don;t think Celestia ever said that Sunset couldn't have pride in her accomplishments, or couldn't have self esteem. She just wanted Sunset to be a decent person and not be conceited and act like a jerk.
It's not a parent throwing their child out for not being perfect. It's a teacher/boss telling a person who doesn't work well with others that they weren't going to be put in a position over others. Even the Element of Magic itself showed in it's reaction that Sunset was clearly not fit for it, in it's rather violent reaction.
Not until she shaped up a little.
