What's unfair about it? It's probably true, and at least 85% of the time. And what is even wrong with that? I have no problem with self-insert as a way for new writers to get to grips with writing. People who should no better? Well, hell, we're all allowed to indulge sometimes.
Don't feel bad about how you feel. Admit privately what you suspect is the case and either enjoy it, share the love, or keep quiet.
