I have found my people.

I didn't last as long as season 4. When season 3 started and she was in every episode despite being locked up, I knew I was on my way to being done. Her voice sets me on edge and any interest I had in her dried up as soon as it became clear she would be coming onto the team. By the time they lost Carter, making her spot that much more obvious and secure, I quit out and haven't looked back since.

The other day I looked back through my old PoI posts on tumblr, and it did make me sad that I fell out of what was such a great fandom for me. But then I hear the new generation of fans talk about how great the show is now, ~so much better than lame season 1~, and I don't feel the need to catch up anymore. Maybe when the show is totally over I'll give it another shot, but not before.

Thank god, someone understands! Her voice, and pretty much everything about both the character and the actress rubs me the wrong way. I agree losing Carter made the shoehorning of Root much worse. With Carter gone, show changed way too much, it felt like a gaping hole was left where she was. The whole relationship dynamics between Reese and Finch changed in s4, they hardly got any scenes together -- and all because they felt the need to put Root in as many scenes with Finch as possible. When she saved the day for about a billionth time, and when Shaw was written out, it became "The Root Show" and I finally had to give up. You haven't missed out by not watching S4, I wish I had quit sooner as well, but I was too curious to see how the story pans out (apparently not curious enough, though).

Ugh, even the phrase "Root saves the day" makes my skin crawl. Normally a villain joining the good guys because their interests align/they don't have a choice or whatever is one of my favorite tropes, but in her case I just can't stand it. You can smell Writers' Darling on her from miles away.

Honestly I wasn't happy with the rest of season 3 even before she took over. Early on it felt like they just didn't know what to do with Reese anymore, but I guess in hindsight they were just gearing up for Carter's death and the fallout. His angst at having lost another woman that he loved because he "failed" to protect them was a storyline I could not have wanted to watch less. Add Root to that, as well as a drop in the number of Finch and Reese interactions, and yeah, dropping out was all I could do.

I think it was you who said below this season should just end with their deaths, and I totally agree. Not because I vindictively want them dead, it's just the most appropriate ending. As long as Fusco survives, though.

Yeah, I normally like villains in a way and seeing them fight on the good side can be fun. The problem with Root is that the writers chose to ignore all the bad things she's done and decided to forcefully write her into as many scenes as possible. Finch was afraid to go out of the house after all she's done to him, yet now he calls her a friend. Scenes he would have normally share with Reese are now being shared with Root instead. I agree that the writers are obviously in love with her.

I also agree that they had no idea what to do with Reese, which partially has to do with Shaw, who got the badass scenes Reese normally would. I love Shaw, but I do think this was the case. Reese just sort of hangs around doing pretty much nothing.

I love Finch and Reese and seeing them getting killed would be painful, but I just can't envision any other ending to their story, at least not an ending that makes sense. Since the writers have no idea if they'll get more episodes, they'll probably write a sorry excuse for the shows mid-season ending, and then it's gonna turn out that was the series' finale. It just makes me sad when something I used to love gets ruined in such a way.
