Well, I'm sorry you feel that way

I still think Root owns, though

(Anonymous) 2015-09-22 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Trust me, I'm even more sorry. I wish I felt the way you do. -op

(Anonymous) 2015-09-22 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
If you don't care for the character, that's fine...

...but don't you think the "looking up pictures for this secret makes me sick" bit is kind of a little overdramatic?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-22 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but it's not necessarily being dramatic. Especially if they were sort of forcing themselves to watch, as implied, this could certainly be literally true. My sister got nauseous taking a specific corner in town for years because it was the way she used to go to work, and she *hated* that job by the end. The human body responds in all sorts of interesting ways to stress, depending on the person, and this just might be it for OP.

+1 to all of that.

I haven't liked Root since she first appeared, although I grew to tolerate her, at least, and kept watching. I can obviously understand disliking her, but I can't understand how it would get to that extent. How is she that bad to you, OP, that even just looking at pictures of her makes you sick?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-22 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
IDK looking at pictures of her makes me happy, so i can certainly understand the opposite taking place

(Anonymous) 2015-09-22 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, perhaps this isn't just solely because I dislike her character, it may be because she symbolizes everything that I've been starting to hate about the show altogether. I know I'm in minority here, but I don't appreciate what they did to the show in S4, how much they retconned a lot of things and I don't like how important they made Root (I'd be fine with her being a proper villain, but not this) -- but, if only I didn't find her so obnoxious I could still enjoy the show.

So, yes, looking up pictures of Root makes me sick, because she's the reason I can't enjoy the show I once loved dearly anymore and that just makes me, well, sad. So I made this secret because I had to vent somewhere (I'll still get bashed, but, hey, at least it's anonymous).

I can understand you guys liking her, though. People were telling Michael Emerson they had to quit LOST because they couldn't stand him and that's something I could never relate to, so I can understand people not relating to my dislike of Amy Acker. *shrug*

TBH, OP, I'm not totally thrilled with the way the show has swept Root's grievous offences against Team Machine under the rug, but there are signs she's taken a lot of the Machine's Finch-inspired statements to heart, particularly the need to treat all human lives as special, not just those of a chosen segment of humanity.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-22 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
She's definitely changed hugely. I think some of that is character development, and that's really good and cool. But it's to such an extent that it's hard not to view it as just straight-up retconning and changing who she is.

However, at the same time, I love every single version of the character so it doesn't bother me. It's all great. Because Root is the best (every other PoI character is also the best)

Spoiler for late season 4

Yea, when she first 'joined' the team I wasn't happy at all. It isn't that I hated the portrayal of the character (Amy does a great job as far as I'm concerned), but I wasn't sure about that direction either. I, like you, didn't want all the bad she had done to be completely forgotten.

But I can't lie and say that both the actress, her character arc and the chemistry she had with the other cast members didn't change my mind. Now Root is easily one of my favorite characters on the show, and though I feel like certain aspects of her change might be pushing it a bit for some people, I also feel like on a whole it makes sense for her. I'm willing to run with it because I think the show is doing a compelling job with her.

So...sorry OP. (Seriously.)

(Anonymous) 2015-09-22 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Is that Amy Acker? If so, I don't blame you for hating the character, OP.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-22 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, that's Amy Acker. I think she's the cutest <3

I as going to ask, too. wow, she has changed quite a bit. she used to be so ultra-thin and now there's a faint hint of chubby in her face. she looks more real now, somehow, not so much like a little fairy. SHe could totally do a joan baez biopic now.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-25 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
haha my thoughts exactly

(Anonymous) 2015-09-22 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
That is one horrifying smile. oO I don't know anything about this canon, but I wouldn't want to watch that either.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-22 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, she's meant to be pretty crazy

(Anonymous) 2015-09-22 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
idk, i initially found her annoying, but then there was that episode where she goes on that big rant at Finch, and you sort of realise she's incredibly nihilistic and cynical instead of just plain crazy.

now i find her interesting. she's like Greer in a lot of ways.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-23 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I have found my people.

I didn't last as long as season 4. When season 3 started and she was in every episode despite being locked up, I knew I was on my way to being done. Her voice sets me on edge and any interest I had in her dried up as soon as it became clear she would be coming onto the team. By the time they lost Carter, making her spot that much more obvious and secure, I quit out and haven't looked back since.

The other day I looked back through my old PoI posts on tumblr, and it did make me sad that I fell out of what was such a great fandom for me. But then I hear the new generation of fans talk about how great the show is now, ~so much better than lame season 1~, and I don't feel the need to catch up anymore. Maybe when the show is totally over I'll give it another shot, but not before.

You're not alone OP.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-23 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
Thank god, someone understands! Her voice, and pretty much everything about both the character and the actress rubs me the wrong way. I agree losing Carter made the shoehorning of Root much worse. With Carter gone, show changed way too much, it felt like a gaping hole was left where she was. The whole relationship dynamics between Reese and Finch changed in s4, they hardly got any scenes together -- and all because they felt the need to put Root in as many scenes with Finch as possible. When she saved the day for about a billionth time, and when Shaw was written out, it became "The Root Show" and I finally had to give up. You haven't missed out by not watching S4, I wish I had quit sooner as well, but I was too curious to see how the story pans out (apparently not curious enough, though).

I do like Root but I'm with you on not liking season 4. It's just too different from what I liked about early PoI in the first place, plus I felt that season 3 suffered from having too many things going on at once (HR, Vigilance, Decima, Carter and John's meltdown); I just wish they had spaced it out more for another (half) season and didn't so suddenly drop the original plot (saving numbers) of PoI in favor of going more cyper punk. I'm not really looking forward to season 5, tbh.

It took me half of season 4 to get used to the fact that it's basically a different show now than it was in season 1.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-23 07:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, it's become a different show and I might have gotten used to that if I wasn't too annoyed with Root. I thought s1 was brilliant, s2 was great too, and I liked most of the s3. S4 had a few good moments, but a lot of the things I found so compelling about Poi were lost. Also, it doesn't help that s5 will most likely be the final one, yet the writers will leave the end open just in case it isn't. I hate when writers do that, it usually leads to show having no proper closure. IMHO, the only ending that makes sense would be if both Finch and Reese died (like foreshadowed in the pilot), but since the ending will be left open that can't happen.

I don't think there's anything wrong with her development, it makes sense to me (willing to do anything for Filch/the machine, including playing nice) but I hate obnoxious characters and... I can't stand her. I want to love her (because of root/shaw) but I omg cannotttttttt.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-25 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
I totally feel you -- I LOVED s1 and s2 and even loved Root as a crazy villain. She made my skin crawl and her facial expressions are terrifying. Even the hint of her presence made the guys' [and the viewers'] blood pressure rise. She was such a great villain.

And then that nonsense about her in the 'cage' just made me unable to watch the show--and I was a superfan. I love Finch and Reese, and really liked how Carter brought this other perspective/voice into the show. Of course, by the time I was into Carter, she was pushed off the show : ( But even then I thought the show would regain its awesomeness eventually--only to find that Shaw is overexposed and a cliche badass [almost a female version of Reese, but very 'feelings-less/cold'] and Root is somehow on the team.

Root was SUCH a great villain. I was so disappointed the show just fell apart. I remember how excited I was about the show at the beginning, and how beautiful the characters' work on 'trust/relationships/friendships' was.

It felt so moving to see Reese and Finch share details with each other slowly, and to see Carter more and more integrated into their operation. It was like a serious look at adult friendship/bonds.

And then it all de-evolved : ( !!! I can't tell you how sad I am to think on it. There was such a sense of promise to the show early on. Even if they rushed the 'Reese trusts Finch' part in the pilot, and made Finch too 'everyman-ish' imho. I used to really dislike little details the show could have improved early on--but now I see that they are such minor, tiny things compared to how the show has changed. It's a totally different show now. I think the current/'new' audience is different than the 'old' audience imho [I wonder, I mean].

Anyway I agree 100%! : )
