Shit taste.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-23 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I disagree but that's life

I've not seen this (but I will be watching it as soon as I can find it online), but I HATE Tarantino films. Inglorious Basterds especially. What a stupid movie.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-23 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm lukewarm on him but Inglorious Basterds is probably my favorite of his tbh

Of his movies, the only one I sort of like is Kill Bill (the first one).

Can you expand on your issues? Purely out of curiosity about where you're coming from

(meant to write this in my first response tbh)

Overall, I don't like the over the top gratuitous violence. Also, he rips off a lot of movies. Yeah, they are homages but that accounts for the large percentage of his movies. Tarantino movies are (for me) basically a chance to go, "I like the part of this scene, let me see where he took it from and watch that movie." That is much easier these days with people that take apart his movies scene by scene.

Specifically for Inglorious Basterds. I just found it boring. Like...seriously boring as fuck. It was 90% just people talking. I didn't like the Basterds as characters. Not to see I don't like those two things. One of my favorite recent movies is Locke, a movie with one person in a car talking. And unlikable protagonists are not something I hate (I loved Breaking Bad). But I hate the way Tarantino does it.

Also, I've heard he is a sort of an asshole and creep.

I love Tarantino in general, but I know a lot of people who hate Tarantino but still loved Inglourious Basterds.

the point of many of Tarantino's movies is largely that they're "stupid", i.e. do not have factually accurate or particularly logical (common sense-wise) narratives. I mean, this isn't everyone's cup of tea, of course, but he is very much doing this on purpose.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-23 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
This, pretty much

although I'm not sure I 100% agree that 'stupid' is a correct descriptor here

I was just using stupid to describe how I feel about them. I expect they are vaguely intelligent. But I hate them and didn't feel like writing why. :P

Vaguely intelligent like drunken commentary once in a while can hit upon a good point, but mostly it's just slurred shite.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-24 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, and maybe Kill Bill are his only good films. Everything else is crap.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-23 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
lolwut

(Anonymous) 2015-09-23 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Those are not comparable. One is a meta-ironical spaghetti western-comedy (unfunny as hell though) with absolutely no regard for history or facts, the other tries for a historical re-telling of events. Their scenery can be mistaken for the same, but it's not.

You're so way off I think you might be trolling actually. Congrats then.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-23 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
And the one with no regard for history or facts is way better

Also, I don't think "no regard for history or facts" quite gets the point: it's a conscious decision to flout history. they didn't just fail to do their research and not notice that hitler didn't get assassinated by a squad of jewish revenge assassins.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-24 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
But "absolutely no regard" isn't opposite from "a conscious decision to flout" last I checked?

I like both, actually, but they're very different films. Valkyrie is a drama based on real-life people and incidents. Inglorious Basterds is essentially a 70s-style revenge flick, because Tarantino's entire output is one big love-letter to that era of film.

PS Credit should be given to Valkyrie for its really stark use of color.

I agree!

Wholeheartedly agree

(Anonymous) 2015-09-24 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Basterds was way too long. Even worse, it was incredibly boring. Especially for someone who's enjoyed most of his other films.

Valkyrie is great because they tried to get it as correct to the facts of the event as possible.

Pfft. How can you call it a good 'killing Hitler' if they don't actually kill Hitler?!

Advantage: Basterds.
