Weird to read all these complaints about SU being "ugly" when, in my book, it's easily in the top3 prettiest cartoons of the last decade. Characters are diverse, cute and expressive; backgrounds are atmospheric with AMAZING color palettes.

Then again I'm a professional artist myself so I might have a different set of standards.

Of the four main characters, only one is actually American (two if you count Amethyst, which I'm not sure you should). The other two are aliens. Literally aliens from outer space.

Y'know this is actually a thing that artists vent about constantly. They spend years upon years studying art, searching for new inspirations, developing their taste and evolving their own works into something unique and competent.

Only to find out that the mass audience vastly prefers boring garbage because it looks safe or familiar or whatever.

Different set of standards != better set of standards. Shit is subjective. But artists tend to have a different taste from other people, that thing's for sure.

If you're talking about American cartoons, that's like winning the special Olympic. Most American cartoons are ugly as a sin. Shit like Uncle Grandpa, Chowder or Regular Show have some of the ugliest character designs I've seen.

I'm also a professional artist and I hate the Steven Universe characters, they have no real sense of design. The body shape diversity is there but I don't know if I'd agree that they are cute and expressive.

The backgrounds I do love. But the poor animation/character designs kind of stand out in a bad way when the backgrounds have a certain sophistication to them.

The style serves it's purpose overall but I wouldn't call it top 3.

I have to disagree, I think the simple character designs with bright clean colors make a very handy contrast to pop out from the backgrounds.

Most of the cast have pretty well thought out designs, especially crystal gems; amethyst = round, garnet = square, pearl = thin/spiky, and their shapes complement their personalities too. The human characters have nice subtle details on them.

Animation is clunky sometimes I'll give you that, but it's entirely a budget issue and nothing that the designers can avoid (other than by having simple designs).
