I hate anti-smoking commercials. Any and all, they're either really fucking stupid and are currently relying on ruining 5 year old memes, almost as if they want you to smoke (and they do, considering who pays for them), or they're really fucking disgusting and it's like dude, I'm fucken eating. That one lady who sounds like a damn alien, it's not safe for life, just stop it CDC.

Oh, these are awful. Nothing worse than a group of concern trolls whose sole purpose in life is to shame others for their life choices.

People are not stupid. This isn't the 1950s where they don't know smoking is bad. It is also an anxiety-reliever and a nice break from douchebags who think they know how to live someone's life better than them.

I have yet to hear any productive solutions or alternatives to a cigarette craving. Implying people are undateable and/or fools because of the fact they smoke is not helpful in the least. (And hell, some folks don't want a "solution" anyway because they don't give a shit, so why should some annoying random stranger?)

This. I'm a non-smoker, the smell drives me nuts, but hell, I can just go somewhere else at some point if it really gets to me. And the bottom line is that it's not my place to tell people what to do with their bodies.

If it was just their bodies, I would agree with you. But second-hand smoke is a thing.

And amazingly, most people have the ability to move away from the smoke.

Where addiction is concerned, yes, people are effectively stupid. They make stupid life choices. Shocking people into undergoing the kind of physical and mental pain it takes to quit, is one effective way to do it. It's also very effective for stopping young people from starting.

I have yet to hear any productive solutions or alternatives to a cigarette craving. Uhhh there's a reason cigarette smoking prevalence has plummeted. This is a very naive statement.

It is also an anxiety-reliever and a nice break from douchebags who think they know how to live someone's life better than them.
For sure, and I'll smoke at a party if someone's got some. But unfortunately they're also statistically very harmful to one's health when smoked incessantly for years. My mother lost both her mother and father to smoking. One in five deaths in the USA every year are from smoking-related causes.

I don't believe in banning stuff, I'd rather drugs and alcohol and sugar and etc etc etc be treated as a health/recreation issue, than a criminal issue. But that said if the science shows that something is REALLY bad for you, especially if addiction is involved, then I absolutely think it's the role of health authorities to broadcast that information, even if it makes the non-smokers ~uncomfortable during dinner too.

Shocking people into undergoing the kind of physical and mental pain it takes to quit, is one effective way to do it. It's also very effective for stopping young people from starting.

No, it is a bullying method that bullies and concern trolls use when they want to put someone in their place. Saying that cigarettes have over 7000 chemicals that can harm you is good to know. Framing the information in a way that shames the smoker or implies that they are incredibly stupid is not helpful. Trying to control someone's life to counter something you believe is controlling that person's life is backwards, arrogant and self-serving. It is basically saying "you are too dumb to live your life so you have an obligation to follow what we're telling you, and if you don't, then you're an asshole."

Uhhh there's a reason cigarette smoking prevalence has plummeted. This is a very naive statement.

I agree, yours is a very naive statement. And vague. You don't seem to mention this "reason" why "cigarette smoking prevalence has plummeted." For all you know, people have just stopped reporting their use. Or they could be taking up cigars, marijuana, spice, hookah, etc instead (hell, are e-cigs even counted in the cigarette stats?). Or considering the taxes on cigarettes these days, maybe they just can't afford them anymore. I'll guarantee it has NOTHING to do with these stupid ads being shown on television.

And when I say "productive solutions," I am talking about solutions that are productive for the smokers, not the shamers.

But unfortunately they're also statistically very harmful to one's health when smoked incessantly for years. My mother lost both her mother and father to smoking. One in five deaths in the USA every year are from smoking-related causes.

"Smoking-related causes" means that something else contributed to the death. If you have shitty DNA, a bad diet, a sedentary and/or stressful lifestyle, exposure to non-cigarette toxins, then cigarettes will absolutely make that worse and increase your risk for certain diseases/cancer. But you don't just die of smoking.

I don't have a problem with them distributing information about something dangerous. I do have a problem with their methods and their exaggerations. And don't kid yourself if you think any authority is broadcasting it for the sake of people's health. If that were the case, they would give trans fats, polluted cities, toxic relationships, cell phone use while driving, and office jobs the same attention.

Lol ok we have a conspiracy theorist. Keep making those acrobatic leaps of logic.
