Media you are looking forward to - with reservations

[personal profile] fishnchips 2015-09-24 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
What are some upcoming things you are looking forward to but at the same time are afraid they will suck? The things that could be really cool but there's a chance that either the creators or the future fandom will fuck it up?

Crimson Peak. Cast is awesome, director is awesome, and the premise could be great. At the same time, I feel like that genre has a really high degree of difficulty for me to like it, and I wasn't 100% on board with the trailer - it just seemed a lot more straight-up than I thought it might be.

Seconding this. I was disappointed by most of the horror movies I have seen recently.

Prometheus 2 / Alien: Paradise Lost.

So much potential for suckage, and yet, I'll be there. At least Lindelof is gone from writing... but the new team is kinda nobody. On the other hand, The Martian makes it look like Ridley's got his groove back.

I dislike it's being made
I already hate it
I'll still watch it and hope that it's better than Prometheus 1 at least

The goddamm monster high movie..universal can adapt and elevate big franchises but my god do they suck at smaller stuff. I have very little hope for Jem, and slightly more so for MH.

For me, it's Final Fantasy XV. I like what I've seen so far but if it turns out that it'll have a main romance, it's probably going to be a dealbreaker.

I was just made aware that there is a Hotel Transylvania 2 opening tomorrow, and I am filled with equal amounts of want and fear.

SW8. First Secret Weapon without John Wardley, but with some evidence pointing towards a cross-valley RMC, it should be hella based.

Urbance. I mean, looks cool and all but it could go very wrong. And even if it doesn't- the fandom and hatedom are already shaping up to be totally obnoxious.
And while I generally don't share the whole "wahh homophobes! Waaah racists! Waah transphobes!" sentiment (especially not without watching it first), the original premise reminded me a lot of that weird "Save the pearls" book- only about sex/sexuality instead of race.

It'll either be a mess, or forgettable.

The Jungle Book. I like a lot of the voice actors in it but I've not had much fun with Disney's live action stuff.

Quite a few future MCU movies. The MCU has yet to disappoint me; so far the only movies I thought came even close to being bad were Iron Man 2 and The Incredible Hulk. I even liked Age of Ultron, although it wasn't as good as its predecessor.

However, I'm sceptical about Civil War and Doctor Strange, the former because it's an adaptation of one of the worst storylines in superhero comic history, the latter because I think Doctor Strange is the sort of comic that would be REALLY tough to pull off as a film. It has to have a precise balance of camp and seriousness; go too far in either direction and you'll end up with a travesty. Furthermore, Stephen Strange himself is a character that requires an perfect balancing act; he shouldn't seem out of place in Epic Fantasy/Cosmic Horror settings, but he should also be believable as a guy who used to be an ordinary non-magical surgeon. Frankly, I'm not convinced that Cumberbatch is capable of doing both those things at the same time.

Lastly, while I am a big fan of the recent run of Captain Marvel comics and look forward to seeing a Captain Marvel movie, I can't help but find it awkward* that it's taking Marvel this long to make a female-led superhero film. I worry that if this movie tanks, or is even just a little less successful than the films before it, it'll give TPTB an excuse to not make more films with female protagonists. Which would be awful.

*Not sure if that's exactly the right word I'm looking for, but it's all that comes to mind right now 'cause I'm tired as fuck.

I've had mixed experiences with the Tales games, but Tales of Zestiria sounds promising. I like the idea of a protagonist who everyone else thinks is crazy because he talks to spirits no one else can see, trying to complete a quest normal people don't know or care about while a war rages that he wants no part in. I hope it doesn't wind up too clunky like Abyss or too grindy like Innocence.

Anything by BioWare (I'm looking forward to Dragon Age 4 more than Mass Effect 4 at this point, even though god knows how many years off the next Dragon Age game is. I'm excited to see where DA4 is going story wise. I do think by the time Mass Effect 4 rolls around I'll be all kinds of excited, but right now I'm just kind of going, "Yay?")

There's probably more, but right now the only other major one I can think of is Civil War. Like...I'm kind of dreading it, but it's also starting to sound like Steve and Bucky are important (and maybe the insanely large cast isn't going to be the train-wreck it sounds to be), and Steve and Bucky are important to me so it should be just what I want, unless it turns out like AOU. lol.

And Star Wars, though I'm not following it at all. I'm just looking forward to seeing Star Wars in theaters again.

Frozen 2

(Anonymous) 2015-09-25 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't care for the first one, but I heard about/saw all the Helsa merchandise Disney is pushing, and that Frozen Hearts book about Hans-that self arm, yikes-and I've decided to see the sequel out of curiosity.

The live action Disney Beauty and the Beast. The supporting cast is fucking incredible. But I'm afraid the leads might be "oh wow my three months of vocal training were intense" and "For someone who's never sung professionally before, you did a great job" mediocre, or even earplug-worthy awful. And if that happens I pity the other occupants of the movie theatre I see it in, because they'll keep wondering what that weird grinding noise is. (Spoiler: it'll be my teeth.)

That was my main problem with the Les Misérables movie - Support cast was okay, but damn, Russell Crowe can't sing to save his life (or at least not in the range that the role of Javert demands).
