Re: Media you are looking forward to - with reservations

Quite a few future MCU movies. The MCU has yet to disappoint me; so far the only movies I thought came even close to being bad were Iron Man 2 and The Incredible Hulk. I even liked Age of Ultron, although it wasn't as good as its predecessor.

However, I'm sceptical about Civil War and Doctor Strange, the former because it's an adaptation of one of the worst storylines in superhero comic history, the latter because I think Doctor Strange is the sort of comic that would be REALLY tough to pull off as a film. It has to have a precise balance of camp and seriousness; go too far in either direction and you'll end up with a travesty. Furthermore, Stephen Strange himself is a character that requires an perfect balancing act; he shouldn't seem out of place in Epic Fantasy/Cosmic Horror settings, but he should also be believable as a guy who used to be an ordinary non-magical surgeon. Frankly, I'm not convinced that Cumberbatch is capable of doing both those things at the same time.

Lastly, while I am a big fan of the recent run of Captain Marvel comics and look forward to seeing a Captain Marvel movie, I can't help but find it awkward* that it's taking Marvel this long to make a female-led superhero film. I worry that if this movie tanks, or is even just a little less successful than the films before it, it'll give TPTB an excuse to not make more films with female protagonists. Which would be awful.

*Not sure if that's exactly the right word I'm looking for, but it's all that comes to mind right now 'cause I'm tired as fuck.
