I wouldn't say "mental illness" is a common subject. It does have a lot of plots about how the characters are coping or not coping with the loss of their leader, but dealing with your issues and not letting them drag you down is a major focus of the show. There are also a lot of lighter episodes, like one about putting on a play or another about visiting a friend's house.
