I think that the books are shallow to begin with. Why spend so much time writing about shit you don't agree with, instead of just... you know, writing about women in the working world? I dunno. Makes no sense.

There was no working world for women in the early 1800's. And you write about 'shit you don't agree with' to change it.

Not in a positive light, you dont. And just because there wasn't one didn't mean they could have written about the concept to attempt to change something.

In 'Persuasion', she makes an outright attack on how women had to live during the era. And a lot of her heroines are unusually self-sufficient and smart, and they still get the guy, even though they weren't conventional. That's not something you see much in today's world. And the characters who followed the ways of society at the time are the most ridiculous in all her works.

To write about women in the working world then was pretty much unthinkable. It wasn't even an idea that could be put to paper. No one would buy it, so she wouldn't get any changes made, and it's unlikely that anyone would want to publish it. Even if she had thought of it.

I love Jane Austen but the fact is she didn't know anything about women in the "working world." So she wrote about what she did know which she herself admitted was a very limited sphere.

And it's not about "marrying a rich guy." Practically speaking, a lot of women were stuck if they didn't inherit anything and couldn't find a man with some kind of income, but that isn't even the plot of all her books. (Emma had her own money, for example, and pretty much pretended she didn't care if she got married or not.) Generally you can see the contempt in the books for women who marry for money or social status if they don't respect the person.

I mean, if people don't like them, fine, they don't like them. I don't really care; they're just books, but... they're not supposed to be about how wonderful and romantic being rich is. That's just a huge misinterpretation.
