Like can anyone give an objectively good reason why you shouldn't have lots of cats named after favorite characters (assuming you are able to adequately care for said cats)?

Exactly. My grandmother had a huge herd of dogs (at least 7 at any given time) and she was rich af and those dogs were pampered and loved and well-fed and looked after. There's nothing eccentric about loving animals and wanting to surround yourself with them as long as they're being taken care of--it's just that the cat hoarders who are sick and forget to feed and clean them get all the publicity.

I see nothing wrong with this. Owning a home is a perfectly normal and valid thing to want, and cats are adorable so if you're an animal lover, why not?

I know I'm jealous as fuck of Will Graham's herd of dogs (and absolutely nothing else about him because his life sucks. Okay, that's a lie, he's cute, but other than that, absolutely nothing).

This is 100% a life-goal of mine too, no shame.

Alas, only one of my four cats is named after a favorite fictional character -- Tony Stark. Two of the others have shelter names that didn't sound anything like any name that I preferred. The third has a shelter name that suits her perfectly, but I'd never heard of the critter she's named after, before I adopted her (Navi).

Navi (as in the fairy) or Na'vi?

A nice country cottage. At least one dog for guarding purposes and to pretend I care about exercise by walking him/her every day.

Sounds fine to me.

A lot of perfectly reasonable aspirations get laughed at by society because they're popular with women, that's all.

'Cat lady' is only an insult because all women should be running around servicing men and children, making themselves beautiful and being rabid consumers instead of just enjoying their lives and having cats (if that's what they want, or whatever they want instead). Laugh at women's aspirations and turn them into a joke, that's the key to keeping them on the straight and narrow.
