Ouch, so much secondhand embarrassment :X

I agree with the others that there's no real point in saying anything to them - you'll just end up an asshole.
But I get you. I hate telling people IRL that I write fic, even though most of what I write is more gen than any kind of romance. But bringing it to a writing group... //shudder//

...was the fic any good?
