I think it depends.

Is the writing group specifically centered around fandom and fanfiction? If so, I think folks have a right to bring what they want.

There's a time and place for everything. If you're judging people for doing something they're perfectly allowed to do, then you've probably ended up in the wrong place.

If the group were specifically centered around fandom and fanfiction, I can't see the second-hand embarrassment at all. But when reading the secret, I automatically presumed it was just your regular run-of-the-mill writers group. In that context, yes, I do agree with OP about the second-hand embarrassment, when it's an intensely fannish activity shared with non-fans who just don't get it.
