Right there with you OP. Although I don't think I'm so much "lazy" as just too chickenshit to try. I wrote a lot in my teens, but for the last five years or so, nothing. Partially because I never learned to draft, so every word I put down is scrutinized and labored over ad nauseam, and it makes me hate writing, even though I'm not too bad at it.

But yeah, I have so many ideas, and I don't know about you, OP, but one problem I have is that I'm still too much of a writer to accept other people's takes on my ideas as close enough. My fics ideas tend to be so specific in my mind that if I got a fill, I would love the fic I got, but my desire for the fic in my head would not be lessened at all.

Give yourself permission to suck, anon. It might also be worth your while to learn how to draft. The only hard is forcing yourself NOT to stop and obsess over every word. Set a timer, write like the wind and tell yourself that you're not stopping to edit for ANY reason until the timer rings. When the timer rings, there's your rough draft. THEN you can go back and edit.

This kind of isn't how language and my brain function together. It's like my brain's ability to conceptualize language is either on or off, with no in-between settings. I'm the same way with reading. I read every single word. I always have. When I try to scan all I get is gibberish. And I have tried. I've tried writing drills. I've tried reading drills. Gibberish.

Sometimes I wonder if it's because I was born two months premature. I know people who were born slightly more premature than I was and they essentially have brain damage that affects their brain's ability to process in certain ways. The same could be true of me, but to a lesser extent.

Or maybe I just need to try harder. *shrugs*

Overshare. Sorry.

Your advice is good advice though. Maybe I'll try it again. I haven't entirely given up on a breakthrough. :)

You also might write really short drables and obsess over word choice all you want.

Well, retraining takes time and consistent effort over time, and the more stubborn a habit is, the more time and effort it'll likely take. Good luck!

I need to try more of this for myself. Feeling the need to edit as I write is definitely a huge problem for me, and I need to remind myself what the whole point of a first draft is :p.
