Kink memes/prompt memes?

Not exactly the same thing, but I am having a huge problem with lack of motivation to write lately. I wrote, and posted a short fanfic not all that long ago, and I thought that would get me motivated to work on other fics that have been collecting dust, but it just sputtered out. ;_; I really want to get some of my longer fics done.

sounds like a writer's block.

Join the club. I've been struggling through that as well. I hope your muse/inspiration can get sparking again soon.

Same. I have notes and notes of different ideas for various fandoms, multiple unfinished fics that are just a few lines, as well as some that are over 5k (that's a high word count for me). There are three fics I wanted to write this weekend and I played Sims instead.

I know I don't like posting my ideas as prompts because I want to write them myself, but if you don't have that problem, why don't you post them as prompts somewhere? They might inspire someone else!

There's always kink memes! (Er, if you even have an active one in your fandom. They seem to be going out of style as of late.)

I've always been fond of kink memes because I have plenty of ideas but can't write.

I hope you get your motivation back!

I have the ideas, but never the motivation/skill.

I do write original stuff and there seems to be ideas that hang on me, but that I'm too intimidated to take on. Usually it's stuff related to historical fiction because both of my ideas would require an insane amount of research/world-building and I can see so many ways where I'd screw up. Like it's a common time-traveling trope to have a time traveler go back in time and try to kill Hitler. Spoiler alert: it never ends well. But I'm wondering if someone ever wrote a story where someone tried to save the Archduke Franz Ferdinand? After all, his death set World War I into play, which brought down nearly every royal family except the Brits, gave birth to Soviet Russia, and paved the way for the even bloodier World War II. Seriously, I bequeath this idea to anyone willing to take it on. Because if World War I didn't happen, would Hitler have come to power in the first place?

I also have an alternate history where the last Romanovs were rescued, except for the Tsarevich and Nicholas II. Basically the general idea was that they are sent to America where they have to make new lives, and in this version, the US government, rather than fighting a secret undeclared war in Russia, they decide to openly declare war. But the public is weary of war so they want to use the surviving Romanovs as a means of stirring up the public, so they can be like, "Here's what you're fighting for."

But the idea of having to try to construct voices for them and all the research and whatnot...like I said, it intimidates me.

I guess that's what separates a real author from a happy amateur: the determination and work-ethic it takes to carry out an idea until it stands on its own two feet as a work.

[personal profile] solticisekf 2015-09-27 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
is there such thing as a happy author? A writer to whom it comes effortlessy.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-27 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably, somewhere. But being happy with working hard sounds more practical. Still doesn't guarantee success, but the chance should increase.

I think there's something wrong with the idea that you aren't happy or having fun with something if you're also working hard at it.

Not to mention the smugness, or the ability to patronize at the drop of a hat. Also apparently key qualities.

sorry, but this

writers write. other people like their head cinema.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-27 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably true, but unnecessarily dickish to point out. I guess that makes you a regular asshole instead of a lazy asshole.

No, dear, what separates a real author from a happy amateur is money.

Right there with you OP. Although I don't think I'm so much "lazy" as just too chickenshit to try. I wrote a lot in my teens, but for the last five years or so, nothing. Partially because I never learned to draft, so every word I put down is scrutinized and labored over ad nauseam, and it makes me hate writing, even though I'm not too bad at it.

But yeah, I have so many ideas, and I don't know about you, OP, but one problem I have is that I'm still too much of a writer to accept other people's takes on my ideas as close enough. My fics ideas tend to be so specific in my mind that if I got a fill, I would love the fic I got, but my desire for the fic in my head would not be lessened at all.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-27 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Give yourself permission to suck, anon. It might also be worth your while to learn how to draft. The only hard is forcing yourself NOT to stop and obsess over every word. Set a timer, write like the wind and tell yourself that you're not stopping to edit for ANY reason until the timer rings. When the timer rings, there's your rough draft. THEN you can go back and edit.

Same. I usually just write the fun parts and say fuck it. Too much work, too little pay!

I want to write long fics, but I always just write little short fics that make people sad.

...I like making people sad on purpose

Sounds like me, OP. I support recommendations to investigate kink memes. Allso, if you ever come across a good partner, RP is a great writing outlet as well.
