Hmmm...It's hard to describe, but if I get the feeling that a show/movie is especially depressing or cynical or gritty or something. I definitely stay away if that's something that gets praised about it: 'oh, this is so dark' 'oh, this shows perfectly the bleak nature of mankind' or whatever. I don't need everything to be sunshine and roses, but I dislike stuff that goes out of its way to make you miserable the whole time.

Same, I dislike it for the assumption that gritty and cynical = mature and realistic, showing what the world is REALLY like.

Reminds me of the way I used to think when I was 14. No thanks.
