Aspects of a canon that immediately make you say, "Nope, not interested."

Re: Aspects of a canon that immediately make you say, "Nope, not interested."

I've got a few of them.

- Being really, really long. I'm not going to bother with book/comic series that goes over 20 volumes, any TV series that goes over 100 episodes. No fucking way.

- Regarding books specifically: 9 times out of 10, being written in first person. I make exceptions for older literature (Sherlock Holmes, Moby-Dick, To Kill a Mockingbird, etc.), but I have yet to come across a late 20th century/21st century author who could write 1st person in a way that didn't make me cringe.

- People getting eaten. Sorry Hannibal, I'm sure you're a great show! You're just not for me. Your entire premise freaks me the fuck out.

Agreeing with two of these! Being super long? No way. Especially comics because not only are they long but there are 8 different versions.

And people being eaten. Can't do it. Cannibalism creeps me the fuck out (and the fans don't help).

Rape
Too much man angst
Too dark and gritty. Unless it's like a Stephen King horror I see no reason for over the top violence to make it ~more real~.
Romance is main focus

I'll put up with comics because I read ongoing monthlies anyway and some of those have been going since the 40s, so it comes with the territory, but if your book series is too long to be adequately put into three omnibuses I'm not gonna bother. And if it's fantasy I'm super double not going to bother.

eating people, yeah

Yeah, I was going to say, I can't get into Hannibal for that reason.

I'm also glad that Firefly didn't lean on the Reavers too much.

- centered around a love story;
- concentrates on a supposedly "fascinating" toxic, abusive relationship (I mean. I get that some people find this really interesting, and I don't judge them. But I really don't see what's so engaging about abuse. Abuse is usually pretty dull AND it deprives relationships of any subtleties and nuances.)

When the central plot point is about oppression. You can weave that stuff into the story (such as Harry Potter) but when the central conceit is that the main character is facing discrimination it turns me off.

Agree on the first person novels.

Some of mine:

-The protagonist's main goal is finding love
-Protagonist is famous/royalty
-Rape as a main plot point
-Insufferable geniuses

Lately: seeing any new TV show or movie whose cast is more than 50% white dudes.

I have liked white dudes in the past, I might like them again someday, but right now I am just So Not Interested.

When there aren't any single characters and/or a story is just based around one relationship or one family.

I don't always immediately throw it out but I usually like stories with lots of side characters and I'm often not interested in only exploring one relationship.

Anything that makes me think the main or only woman in the series is just a trophy to be won.

Broody everyman guy who lost his wife is the lead.

In horror movies and mysteries especially: the plot centers around a woman who is motivated to kill because babies.

Hmmm...It's hard to describe, but if I get the feeling that a show/movie is especially depressing or cynical or gritty or something. I definitely stay away if that's something that gets praised about it: 'oh, this is so dark' 'oh, this shows perfectly the bleak nature of mankind' or whatever. I don't need everything to be sunshine and roses, but I dislike stuff that goes out of its way to make you miserable the whole time.

This is a book-only thing for me: romantic comedy tropes, like mistaken identities, people keeping something from their love interest, scheming to get someone together or break them up. I don't mind it in movies or television, but there's something about when I'm reading these shenanigans and I'm hearing it all in my own voice that really irritates me.

(Brought to you by the fact that Crazy Rich Asians became a goddamn slog about 100 pages in and I'm struggling to finish it. NORMAL PEOPLE TELL THEIR PARTNERS OF 2+ YEARS ABOUT THEIR FAMILIES, NICK. GOD!)

* Main characters who're a black hole of revenge and killing. Just wanting revenge on the central villain isn't bad, but when you kill person after person and your desire for revenge never lessens, I have to question the point of it.

* Most stuff involving forced sex. A couple years ago, I read an article on Rock Paper Shotgun about a video game based on a book series where one of the races has tentacles and has to regularly have sex with one of the other races in order to survive. My eyes nearly popped out of my head.

Parent-child incest, consummated or not, especially mother-son. Even just inappropriate boundaries between parent and child bother me too much.

I've been reading DH Lawrence lately, and I would love to read "Sons and Lovers" just to read more of this author's works, but the subject matter puts me right off. I've heard such good things about the show Bates Motel, but...nope! I'm one of the world's biggest Carnivale fans, but I can't watch past the point when Sofie and Justin get too close. NOPE NOPE NOPE

Another one -- any book whose back-cover summary involves a male protagonist who meets a woman described as "mysterious and erotic." Especially if the author is a man. Just LOL, no.

And same here for any book or tv series that is really long. Ain't got time for that.

Any Woody Allen style film where beautiful edgy people (mostly young women) do things edgily.

Films where the characters are special snowflakes who disdain the rest of humanity. For example Amelie and Scott Pilgrim.

Huge shared universes with yearly "events" that undermine individual stories.

Torture porn, misery porn to a lesser extent.

-old man hooks up with hot young chick who loves him for his "personality" and not his money.

-asshole protag is an asshole and gets hot chick in the end.

-bullied nerd gains superpowers and gets hot chick in the end.

-ugly chick gets makeover and gets hot dude in the end.

Prequels - I can't find a story interesying if I know exactly what will happen/ where certain characters will end up in the future.

Dark and gritty. Ugh.

Torture porn.

Adventure Time-esque animated shows that are a barrage of fast-paced nonsensical gags/ surreal set ups. My mind, it hurts.

Anything with a cape and/or superhuman powers. I make exceptions, but they are very rare. I hate the aesthetics of US comics and I dislike the charaters and tropes in superhero stories/movies.
