Re: Aspects of a canon that immediately make you say, "Nope, not interested."
(Anonymous) 2015-09-27 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)- Being really, really long. I'm not going to bother with book/comic series that goes over 20 volumes, any TV series that goes over 100 episodes. No fucking way.
- Regarding books specifically: 9 times out of 10, being written in first person. I make exceptions for older literature (Sherlock Holmes, Moby-Dick, To Kill a Mockingbird, etc.), but I have yet to come across a late 20th century/21st century author who could write 1st person in a way that didn't make me cringe.
- People getting eaten. Sorry Hannibal, I'm sure you're a great show! You're just not for me. Your entire premise freaks me the fuck out.
Re: Aspects of a canon that immediately make you say, "Nope, not interested."
And people being eaten. Can't do it. Cannibalism creeps me the fuck out (and the fans don't help).

But I think zombies or other monsters eating people is something very different than sentient people eating other people.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-27 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)Weirdly I don't feel the same way about long-running comics, because they tend to reboot so often and have so many standalone storylines. Like, a 12-issue Batman spin-off is way less intimidating to me than a TV show with a gazillion episodes.
Cannibalism, though... yeah, I just can't deal with any media revolving around it. There are very few things I find truly squicky, and that's one of them.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-27 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)It certainly can be a hassle, even with all the numerous resources like wikis and comics forums and whatnot. I don't even want to think about how hard it must've been to get into Marvel/DC type comics pre-internet era.
Re: Aspects of a canon that immediately make you say, "Nope, not interested."
(Anonymous) 2015-09-27 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)Wanted to clarify; in the above comment I'm referring specifically to long-running superhero comics, as opposed to long-running indie comics or manga that have a single continuous story going on for 20+ volumes.
Re: Aspects of a canon that immediately make you say, "Nope, not interested."
Too much man angst
Too dark and gritty. Unless it's like a Stephen King horror I see no reason for over the top violence to make it ~more real~.
Romance is main focus

eating people, yeah
(Anonymous) 2015-09-27 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)I'm also glad that Firefly didn't lean on the Reavers too much.
