Re: Aspects of a canon that immediately make you say, "Nope, not interested."

I've got a few of them.

- Being really, really long. I'm not going to bother with book/comic series that goes over 20 volumes, any TV series that goes over 100 episodes. No fucking way.

- Regarding books specifically: 9 times out of 10, being written in first person. I make exceptions for older literature (Sherlock Holmes, Moby-Dick, To Kill a Mockingbird, etc.), but I have yet to come across a late 20th century/21st century author who could write 1st person in a way that didn't make me cringe.

- People getting eaten. Sorry Hannibal, I'm sure you're a great show! You're just not for me. Your entire premise freaks me the fuck out.

Agreeing with two of these! Being super long? No way. Especially comics because not only are they long but there are 8 different versions.

And people being eaten. Can't do it. Cannibalism creeps me the fuck out (and the fans don't help).

don't you watch the walking dead?

Yeah. But while I don't like super long things, the 100 episode limit is not a hard cut off for me. Based on a list I just looked at, I think about 150-200 is where I start to lose interest.

I think ayrt was talking about the people being eaten re:Walking Dead.
But I think zombies or other monsters eating people is something very different than sentient people eating other people.

Ohhh! Nah, I don't care about zombies eating people. I am worried about an actual person eating people.

Same. Or rather, in my case: people eating people is bad enough as it is, but the way Hannibal makes other people eat people without their knowledge is the worst about it. Ugh.

AYRT

Weirdly I don't feel the same way about long-running comics, because they tend to reboot so often and have so many standalone storylines. Like, a 12-issue Batman spin-off is way less intimidating to me than a TV show with a gazillion episodes.

Cannibalism, though... yeah, I just can't deal with any media revolving around it. There are very few things I find truly squicky, and that's one of them.

I think the reboots just make it hard for me to figure out where to start :(

AYRT

It certainly can be a hassle, even with all the numerous resources like wikis and comics forums and whatnot. I don't even want to think about how hard it must've been to get into Marvel/DC type comics pre-internet era.

(same anon)

Wanted to clarify; in the above comment I'm referring specifically to long-running superhero comics, as opposed to long-running indie comics or manga that have a single continuous story going on for 20+ volumes.

Rape
Too much man angst
Too dark and gritty. Unless it's like a Stephen King horror I see no reason for over the top violence to make it ~more real~.
Romance is main focus

Yep, yep and yep. Though god help me I'm too invested in GoT already to quit (yet).

Couldn't get into it for the above reasons. Dear lord I tried but it was a dull mildly creeped out trudge and I stopped a chapter off the end of first book. Definitely not for me and sane deal with the TV show. :/

I don't know why I took to the show. I was young and naive and hopeful, and a fan of the Anyone Can Die trope, and the worldbuilding. Now I want to see what happens, dammit. I've just disengaged emotionally somewhat. Not going near the books.

I'll put up with comics because I read ongoing monthlies anyway and some of those have been going since the 40s, so it comes with the territory, but if your book series is too long to be adequately put into three omnibuses I'm not gonna bother. And if it's fantasy I'm super double not going to bother.

eating people, yeah

(Anonymous) 2015-09-27 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was going to say, I can't get into Hannibal for that reason.

I'm also glad that Firefly didn't lean on the Reavers too much.

Re: eating people, yeah

(Anonymous) 2015-09-28 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
It says enough in the first eppie about how threatening the Reavers are that somebody as macho as Jayne is openly afraid of them.
