"Context and reasonable expectation matters"

I think it's fine to talk about fandom or fandomy things, if there was something that naturally led up to it or you know the people you're talking to already have an interest.

On tumblr or on a fandom community, you know you're all there for the same reason and there's a reasonable expectation that everyone is fandomy, just like on a message board for roleplaying you know what everyone is there for or has a passing interest in.

I would not randomly talk about fandom or roleplaying to random strangers and expect them to be familiar or interested in it and if someone brought an essay about how some literary figure totally was a level 10 paladin, I'd cringe. I'd cringe at the Sherlock thing because fanfic is based on the context and reasonable assumption that everyone has watched the show the fic is based on and why on earth would anyone who hasn't, be interested in your headcanon of these characters we don't know?

I agree with this. I think there are times when it's fine to be chatting about fandom and there are times when it's not.

I don't think it's just about it being fandom but just about how respectful you are to other people in opening up topics they may not be interested in. Going on and on about something whether it be sports or Sherlock can be considered weird if you're not with the right audience.

MTE you put it better than I did. The cringing I mentioned would be for the person's lack of social awareness regarding what they are doing and how everyone else feels, not because fandom is cringey

Good points. It's the same with many other hobbies and interests: a little glimpse is nice and lets the person connect with others with the same tastes, but hours on a topic you're not interested in? Torture!

Exactly, it goes for any hobby or topic that isn't considered general knowledge

frex you can reasonably assume everyone is familiar with "watching movies" but "frostiron abo fic" maybe not so much
