Anime

Good short anime series for people who don't like anime but want to get into it? The only thing she has had exposure to is like DBZ, Pokemon, YuGiOh, etc.

what genre of non-anime things is she into?

Uh, she probably already knows Cowboy Bebop, right? It's an obvious suggestion but I find it to be a classic for a reason. Tiger and Bunny is also lots of fun and surprisingly heartfelt. (I think it runs for about 24 episodes?) I also liked Samurai Flamenco which was bizarre but delightfully so and somehow reinvented itself every couple of episodes.

I'm not the best person to ask about anime because I only watch now and then, but Haikyuu!! is extremely adorable as well. It's about volleyball (And teamwork and friendship; all that good shit) but is way more engrossing then I would've originally given it credit for. (Plus the cast is adorable.) That one is ongoing though, and I have no idea how long it will run because the manga is still being published as well.

I'll suggest Cowboy Bebop. The shorter and more complete the better.

I think Samura Flamenco may not be the best series to rec to someone who doesn't like anime, unless they like(d) sentai/sentai inspired series.

Ah, I guess that's true enough. It does play on a lot of tropes. (I guess I was mostly thinking about it because it's short and I find it to be extremely entertaining, but if OP's friend doesn't like anime then it might leave them confused.)

It depends on your genre, of course. Studio Ghibli movies are a great way to start, since they are essentially like watching a Disney movie (well, not really, but sort of) and being a movie, it's less time you need to dedicate. Personally I'd recommend Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke as great ones to start with.

Here are some anime that "end" and aren't that long - no 100+ episode commitment, and they also tend to have fewer of the anime gags that can be off-putting to someone who isn't really familiar with the style. I've had experience showing several of these to non-anime fans and they've gone over pretty well.

-Death Note
-Cowboy Bebop
-Mushishi
-Kino's Journey
-Wolf's Rain
-Fullmetal Alchemist (this one gets more "anime" but at least the first series seems to be pretty easy to get into and serious and charming enough not to be off-putting to skeptics. It's also a little longer but just around 50 episodes)

I just want a random selection to give her to try! She likes western horror and drama. Also weird shit like Rocky horror picture show.

Noir isn't very short, but it isn't very long, and it has some dark/horror elements.

Echoing that it depends on genre, and also the above anon's recs of Ghibli, Kino's Journey, and Mushishi.

Shirobako might also be something to check out - it's a newer anime about making anime; caps off at 24 eps, and stays good throughout. The art style can be kinda generic, but it's not bad and for me, the story makes up for it.

If she doesn't mind trying something kinda mind-bending, Mononoke is a great series. 12 eps long, and kind of episodic. Each story arc takes about 2-3 eps to cover, and they can stand independent of each other as well. If nothing else, it'll definitely go to show anime's more than DBZ, Pokemon, etc XD

She has no preferences. I was just hoping to get a variety of short series for her to watch.

Original Patlabor series, maybe? It's like 7 episodes and giant robots aside is more of a police drama.

Mononoke (NOT Mononoke Hime). Just google Bakeneko arc and you're set.
Ranma 1/2 OVAs are fun to watch.
Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun
Princess Tutu

How short is short, though?

Absolutely second Mononoke - though it might be a bit ... psychedelic for some people. Same thing with Gankutsuou (that one's based on the Count of Monte Cristo).

Something short and fairly entertaining was Shingeki no Bahamhut:Genesis.

Psycho-Pass was pretty good as well.

Personally, I really liked Baccano! but I know several people who were massively turned off by the slightly disjointed way of storytelling.
